MLB releases pandemic-shortened schedule amid testing delays

KINGSTON &mdash; In a video message posted on the district&rsquo;s website Wyoming Valley West Superintendent David Tosh announced three options for the reopening of school Sept. 8, depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the county.
				He stressed several times, however, that everything is subject to change.
				The only thing certain, Tosh said, is that school will start Sept. 8.
				The options depend on whether the COVID-19 pandemic infection rate stays low and the county stays in the green phase of Gov. Tom Wolf&rsquo;s re-opening system. While all 67 counties have moved into the green phase, a resurgence of the infection, particularly in some western counties, has raised concerns restrictions could be re-instated.
				&ldquo;IF things go well over the nest two months and we remain in green with a downward trend,&rdquo; Tosh said, the district hopes to bring all students back to school as normal, with &ldquo;as many precautions as possible.&rdquo;
				If the infection rate rises and the county risks going back to the yellow phase, the district may opt for a system in which students alternate every day, half of them going to school in person and half getting their lessons at home online. The move would leave ample room to hold the in-person classes with ample social-distancing, he said.
				That system would give all students the same opportunities, Tosh said. Over the course of two weeks, they would get five days in person and five learning on line.
				The worst case scenario would be a dramatic increase in infections that would send the county into the red category, forcing schools to close again. The district is prepared to offer learning at home, as was done the last two months of this spring, but attendance, grading and participation &ldquo;will be handled differently&rdquo; than during the emergency closure that began unexpectedly March 16. Students in grades kindergarten through second would get at-home learning packs.
				For parents or students still hesitant to attend school in person, Tosh noted that &ldquo;Wyoming Valley West provides a complete cyber program for K to 12. We ask you call the central office as soon as possible&rdquo; if that&rsquo;s the choice you want to make.
				The plans are still in the works and subject to change, Tosh said, dependent on how the pandemic unfolds, guidance provided by state and federal officials, and local circumstances.
				&ldquo;Please know that safety is our primary concern,&rdquo; he said.
