The drive around Harveys Lake is a lot safer than it was in 2015.
				That was the summer a woman was killed by a drunk driver while she was jogging along the roadway.
				Speed limits have been lowered and drivers are much more careful as they negotiate the scenic drive around the lake, a drive that always conjures up memories of halcyon days at &ldquo;the lake.&rdquo;
				Over the years, Harveys Lake Borough Council lowered speed limits and implemented other safety measures on Lakeside Drive.
				I remember going to the tragic scene in the summer of 2015, and the first thing I noticed was that there were no skid marks on Lakeside Drive where Paula Jones was struck and killed on a Sunday evening.
				Paula Jones likely never knew what hit her.
				Lakeside Drive is a state road &mdash; Route 415 &mdash; and the posted speed limit at the time was 35 mph. I stood on the side of the road staring at the orange circles painted on the pavement where Jones was struck.
				As I wondered about the final minutes of Jones&rsquo; life, I witnessed many vehicles speed by at more than 35 mph &mdash; much more.
				Jones, 31, of Factoryville, was killed between Pole 209 and Pole 210. 
				As I was driving to the scene that day, two adults were biking on the opposite side of the road. They were using quite a bit of the road itself, but would move into single file when they heard traffic coming. But there are many blind turns around the lake. Cars suddenly appear and come upon joggers and bikers.
				They sometimes have to cross the center line to avoid them.
				The situation has definitely improved &mdash; everyone is more aware and more careful. And that is a good thing.
				But if a driver is impaired and traveling at a high rate of speed, what chance, really, would a jogger on Lakeside Drive have if the vehicle is out of control?
				Responsibility has to be the guide here. People can&rsquo;t drink and drive or text and drive. They have to pay attention at all times.
				Or a tragedy will occur.
				I talked to a woman who was jogging on the day I visited the scene. She told me she was well aware of the blind turns and limited shoulder space on Lakeside Drive.
				&ldquo;First of all, too many vehicles go way too fast on this road,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;And many of them are on their cell phones talking or texting. I can see them. I watch them.&rdquo;
				She said she can take evasive action if a vehicle veers toward her. She also said she wears bright clothing, hoping that will serve as a beacon to oncoming traffic.
				When police found the suspect&rsquo;s vehicle on that Sunday evening in 2015, they discovered the damage to the front end and blood on the car, they knocked on the suspect&rsquo;s door.
				His mother told police said he was home and &ldquo;probably drunk.&rdquo;
				This can&rsquo;t happen. We owe it to ourselves and to any person out for a walk or a jog or a bike ride.
				And we owe it most of all to the memory of victims like Paula Jones.
