Local legislators offer comments on state’s school reopening plan

WILKES-BARRE &mdash; The Wilkes University School of education is offering two days of free, online professional development for teachers next Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 18 and 19. The training, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break, will be presented via Zoom.
				The sessions &ldquo;are designed to address the unique challenges being faced by educators as they return to real and virtual classrooms in fall 2020,&rdquo; according to a media release. &ldquo;Each day of professional development offerings begins at 8:30 a.m. and includes five one-hour sessions.&rdquo;
				No registration is required. The schedule is posted at<a href="https://wilkes.edu/pdwebinars" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> https://wilkes.edu/pdwebinars</a>. The Aug. 18 sessions are, in order of presentation, Using Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Work With English Learners, Leadership and Supervision in Online Learning, The Evolution of Online Teaching Panel Discussion, Special Needs Panel Discussion and | Family Engagement for Teachers in the Online Space.
				The topics on Aug. 19, in order of presentation, are: Literacy for Online Environment Panel Discussion, Cyber Security 101: Best Practices, What Does it Mean to Care in Cyberspace?, Cultural Competence and Discussion Boards.
				Teachers looking to get Act 48 credits for the webinars should contact Renee Sipple at renee.sipple@wilkes.edu.
				The sessions are being taught by full-time and adjunct faculty from the school&rsquo;s undergraduate and graduate education programs. They will &ldquo;offer practical information that can immediately be implemented in the classroom,&rdquo; according to the release.
				&ldquo;Many schools have begun the online transition, yet quality online teaching and learning takes intentional time and development,&rdquo; School of Education dean Rhonda Rabbitt said in the release.
				&ldquo;As part of our mission to partner with schools to meet the needs of each student, we are offering free webinars to teachers and administrators for the reality of the upcoming school year. We are creating a new norm and new systems of teaching and learning. We invite educators to join us in becoming part of the solution&mdash;-for the children today who will lead tomorrow.&rdquo;
