WILKES-BARRE &mdash; It was a campaign launch probably unlike any other and certainly different from the eight prior ones Bill Jones presided over, but, then, the CEO of United Way of Wyoming Valley conceded, it is a year unlike any other.
				&ldquo;We&rsquo;re launching what is my ninth campaign in our most uncertain year, but it&rsquo;s a year of great need,&rdquo; Jones said after a brief photo op in the gym of the Catholic Youth Center to mark the start of the organization&rsquo;s 2020 campaign. &ldquo;The pandemic is really difficult on children from low-income families.&rdquo;
				It&rsquo;s not being easy on the United Way&rsquo;s annual campaign, either, which usually launches and publicizes the big effort with gala gatherings, dinners, donor events and celebrity speakers. COVID-19 put the kibosh on all of that.
				&ldquo;I figured, what better way to launch than with children,&rdquo; Jones said, noting the focus of the local United Way has been to find and conduct programs that help low-income children succeed, breaking the cycle of poverty.
				Attorney Paul Rushton joined with Jones in holding up a &ldquo;Live United&rdquo; sign with the organization&rsquo;s logo, standing on the bleachers behind youngsters bearing letter cards spelling out UNITED WAY.
				Photos were snapped, Jones came down from the bleachers and said simply &ldquo;that&rsquo;s the launch&rdquo; before collecting the letters from the children.
				&ldquo;We&rsquo;re making the best of a bad situation,&rdquo; Rushton said. &ldquo;We have a campaign in the middle of a pandemic, but people of the valley have always showed up when things were at their worst.&rdquo; He cited the recovery from the Agnes Flood, as well as more recent natural disasters.
				Jones acknowledged many people who ordinarily would donate may not be able to this year, even as the need for donations is greater thanks to the crisis.
				&ldquo;All we&rsquo;re asking is if you can give, do give.&rdquo;

United Way launches campaign amid pandemic
