WEST PITTSTON &mdash; Mia Magnotta made the plays in regulation that allowed Ella Barbacci to shine in overtime.
				Magnotta made 11 saves for Wyoming Seminary, including a series of tough stops in the second half, to keep Wednesday&rsquo;s game vs. Wyoming Area scoreless long enough to extend it into a seven-on-seven, sudden-death overtime period.
				Barbacci took it from there, ripping a high, hard shot with a reverse stick 4:32 into overtime to lift the defending champion Blue Knights to a 1-0 victory over the Warriors in an early season WVC Division 1 field hockey battle between two of the state&rsquo;s final four teams in Class A a year ago.
				Wyoming Seminary, the two-time defending state champion, extended its conference unbeaten streak to 44 games by winning its 16th straight in the WVC. The only time the Blue Knights did not win during the past three WVC seasons was in a scoreless tie at Wyoming Area&rsquo;s Atlas Field at the end of the 2018 season.
				The teams were scoreless again until Barbacci got to the ball in the middle of the field with room to operate. The sophomore midfielder dribbled into the circle, where she unleashed a hard shot over the head of Wyoming Area goalie Carly Saranchuk. Although Saranchuk got a stick on the ball, the shot had too much momentum and carried into the top of the cage.
				&ldquo;We felt if we could keep it 0-0 and get into overtime, we had a shot,&rdquo; Wyoming Seminary coach Karen Klassner said. &ldquo;Both teams played very well, but the difference in the game was Mia.&rdquo;
				Magnotta, a first-team all-state goalie who is committed to the University of Iowa, has played in three state championship games. She was sharp in as big of a game as a team can face less than two weeks into the season.
				Both teams entered the game 3-0 with Wyoming Seminary holding a half-game lead in the division because one of Wyoming Area&rsquo;s games was non-league.
				&ldquo;It was a good win for us, quite obviously,&rdquo; Klassner said. &ldquo;The kids knew we needed to step it up.
				&ldquo;We just have a psychological thing playing on grass that is really tough to explain, but we played really well despite that and Wyoming Area played a great game.&rdquo;
				Wyoming Seminary had the closest call in an evenly played first half when a rebound settled inches from the goal line before Wyoming Area could clear it away midway through the second quarter. The Warriors got off three shots on one corner attempt earlier in the quarter and ended the half with a penalty corner with no time on the clock.
				Magnotta made four of her saves during a dangerous stretch over the final seven minutes of the third quarter when Wyoming Seminary twice played short for two minutes after players received cards.
				&ldquo;They had some really nice shots,&rdquo; Magnotta said. &ldquo;Their forward, Kayla Kiwak, sent some really strong ones in.&rdquo;
				Kiwak got off a shot similar to Barbacci&rsquo;s game-winner with 3:15 left in regulation, but Magnotta was able to knock it down.
				&ldquo;Hers are tough to defend,&rdquo; Magnotta said. &ldquo; &#8230; She&rsquo;s a tough player to play against.&rdquo;
				Magnotta proved to be tough to get a shot past.
				&ldquo;It just was a fun game to watch and I think a crowd-pleaser that showed what a good game field hockey can be,&rdquo; Klassner said.
				The battle for supremacy among District 2 Class A teams grew in significance before the teams decided their game.
				In an afternoon Board of Directors meeting, the PIAA decided to reduce its state tournaments to district champions only for this season in a streamlining process to address some issues related to the coronavirus pandemic.
				A year ago, Wyoming Area was able to advance from a second-place district finish through two rounds of state play to the semifinals. This season, only the district champion will advance.

				Cameryn Forgash scored twice to lead the Spartans. Paige Williams added a goal and two assists and Olivia Gayoski scored a goal. Jillian Bonczewski and Marissa Mooney both had one assist as well.
				Arianna Rysz made three saves for the shutout.

				Lackawanna Trail scored late to top Crestwood.
				Lena Ryon scored the goal and Belle Coleman picked up the assist.
				Lilly Rejrat made 12 saves to pick up the shut out.
				Hazleton Area 2, Honesdale 0
				Amelia Bredbenner and Jillian Kringe scored to lead the Cougars past Honesdale. Haylee Petroski also had an assist.
				Elaina Ashman made four saves to earn a shut out.
				Dallas 3, Holy Redeemer 1
				Jordan Bond led the way for the Mountaineers, picking up a the first goal and assisting on the second. Hope Frantz also scored a goal and had an assist in the win. Alondra Church scored the other goal and Nadia Evanosky picked up an assist.
				Amanda Puza made five saves to earn the win in goal for Dallas.
				Ava Fino broke through late in the fourth quarter to get the Royals on the board.
				Northwest 2, Hanover Area 1
				The Rangers held Hanover Area to just one shot on goal in a victory.
				Milana Straub and Morgan Hermanofski were the goal scorers for Northwest and Jessica Dzoch picked up an assist.
				Brooke Coleman scored the lone goal for the Hawks.
