Trainmen debarking a stopped train at the Nuangola station of the Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton railway heard the cries of police chief Samuel Stair at about 7 p.m. on Oct. 11, 1912.
				Stair was found lying face down at the bottom of an embankment near the train station. When Stair was rolled over, he mumbled out, &ldquo;Arthur Stackhouse&rdquo; before he died, the Times Leader reported Oct. 11, 1912.
				Stair died from a gunshot wound to his chest.
				&ldquo;The murder has caused no end of excitement among the residents as Stair was well and favorably known. Friends of the victim have organized a posse and are assisting state policemen in their search for the culprit. Threats of lynching have been heard and the officials admit that they fear Stair&rsquo;s friends might take the law into their own hands if they find Stackhouse,&rdquo; the Times Leader reported.
				Stair had taken Stackhouse prisoner for an armed robbery of Catherine Stewart near Nuangola Lake. After appearing before a justice of the peace, Stair returned Stackhouse to the Nuangola train station with intentions of jailing Stackhouse at the Luzerne County Jail.
				While standing on the platform, Stackhouse worked himself loose from Stair and ran away. Stair chased him under a train bridge where Stackhouse fired a shot from a revolver, the Times Leader reported.
				&ldquo;Stackhouse is looked upon as a bad character,&rdquo; the newspaper reported noting he lived with his mother and siblings in a cottage in Alden.
				Stackhouse was 16 when he lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He deserted twice and was captured the second time on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. While jailed at the city police department, he attempted suicide by eating sulphur match sticks, the Evening News reported Oct. 14, 1910.
				Stackhouse was sentenced to 18 months at the Luzerne County Jail for shooting Matthew Cronin in both arms inside Jones&rsquo; Hotel in Alden on March 17, 1910. He was released Nov. 23, 1911.
				After Stair was fatally shot, reports of Stackhouse&rsquo;s sightings plagued the news.
				&ldquo;There are many rumors of the man having been seen at this or that point, but they invariably prove of no consequence after being run down by state troopers,&rdquo; reported the Times Leader Oct. 17, 1912.
				A party of hunters searched farms, coal mines and the heavily wooded Alden Mountain for Stackhouse in the weeks after Stair&rsquo;s murder.
				Stackhouse was formally indicted by a Luzerne County Grand Jury on Jan. 10, 1913.
				&ldquo;Troopers believe they have caught Arthur Stackhouse&rdquo; was the headline of the Times Leader on Feb. 18, 1913, with the story reporting, &ldquo;Tattered and torn and with every evidence that he had been living in the woods for several months, a man believed to be Arthur Stackhouse was arrested this afternoon at Bridgeville, about three miles from Nescopeck.&rdquo;
				Unfortunately, the man was not Stackhouse.
				Other reports had Stackhouse surviving in coal mines in Glen Lyon and Warrior Run, living off food stolen from lunch pales of coal miners.
				State policemen took possession of skeletal remains found in a wooded area in Dupont on April 18, 1915. The Evening News newspaper reported the remains most likely belonged to Stackhouse or John Davis, of Dock Street, Pittston, who disappeared from his home in 1912. Ultimately, the bones were never identified.
				The last report about Stackhouse was reported in the Wilkes-Barre Record on Nov. 30, 1922, when a Luzerne County detective determined a prisoner in Philadelphia was not their man.
				&ldquo;County Detective Richard Powell received photographs and a full description of the man and states that in no way does the Philadelphia prisoner resemble Stackhouse. At the time of the prisoner&rsquo;s arrest, it was hoped that he was the fugitive murderer and that the long search for Stackhouse had ended,&rdquo; the Record reported.
				Stackhouse was never captured for the fatal shooting of Stair, whose name is listed in the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum.
