The American Legion is accepting applications for the following scholarships.Samsung American Legion Scholarship. Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. It was meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea&#8217;s aid during the Korean War.Scholarship applications are restricted to high school juniors who attend the current session of either The American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant or a legally adopted child of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership. Samsung scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees and room and board.Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service and financial need. Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration. For more information visit http://www.legion.org/scholarships/samsung.Eagle Scout of the Year. The American Legion honors the Eagle Scout of the Year at the national convention with a $10,000 scholarship. The three runners up receive $2,500.Joseph William Blaisse, Newtown Square, is The American Legion&#8217;s Eagle Scout of the Year for 2014. A junior at Archbishop John Carroll High School and a member of Sons of The American Legion Squadron 926, Blaisse will receive a $10,000 college scholarship.Nominees must be a registered, active member of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team or Venturing Crew chartered to an American Legion Post, American Legion Auxiliary unit or Sons of The American Legion Squadron or be a registered, active member of a chartered Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team, or Venturing Crew, and the son or grandson of a Legionnaire or Auxiliary member.Nominees must have received the Eagle Scout Award and be an active member of his religious institution and must have received the appropriate Boy Scout religious emblem. They must also have demonstrated practical citizenship in church, school, scouting and community; reached their 15th birthday and be enrolled in high school at the time of selection; reside in the state to which he applies.
