State Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, R-Montgomery County, is on the right track with a recent proposal to create a gun violence protection task force.
The senator proposes a group to assess lawmakers' various proposals to counter the kind of school violence suffered in Newtown, Conn., as well as in Pennsylvania communities, including our own Red Lion.
The task force would consolidate the legislative proposals into recommendations on how to best respond.
He's right that the effort should be done comprehensively rather than piecemeal.
And it's encouraging that he and other GOP leaders consider assessing gun laws to be part of such a task force's mission. Gun laws can't be off the table when considering this serious problem.
That said, Sen. Greenleaf still comes across as pretty skeptical about tightening gun laws. So is Gov. Tom Corbett, judging from his recent comments. 
So, the senator's proposal to have the governor appoint task force members might not be the best idea.
However such a task force is assembled, it must including people willing to look at access to guns -- as well as measures focusing on mental illness, media and video game violence and bullying.
Taking a comprehensive approach is a good idea. Just make sure the task force is fair and balanced.
