WILKES-BARRE &mdash; U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright has been elected chairman of the Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee for the 117th Congress.
				In this position, he will oversee more than $70 billion in annual federal spending on matters of economic development, law enforcement, and science and innovation.
				&ldquo;I have always viewed bringing our fair share of federal investments back to this area as one of the most impactful things I can do as a U.S. Representative, and this leadership role will help expand Northeastern Pennsylvania&rsquo;s share,&rdquo; said Cartwright, D-Moosic. &ldquo;In this position, I look forward to directing money to help our small businesses recover from the pandemic, bring home new jobs, and expand opportunities for local companies to do business with the federal government. These are challenging times, but Northeastern Pennsylvania has great potential for growth, and I am optimistic about our future.&rdquo;
				Cartwright served as Vice Chair for the CJS Subcommittee during the 116th Congress and helped bring back more than $270 million to Northeastern Pennsylvania. He said federal funding supported education initiatives like Head Start, provided safety equipment for law enforcement officers, and delivered coronavirus relief to help the region weather the pandemic.
				As Chairman of this subcommittee, Cartwright will oversee funding for the Departments of Commerce and Justice, as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and National Science Foundation, among others.
				Additional Democratic members of the CJS Subcommittee are: Grace Meng (NY-06), Charlie Crist (FL-13), Ed Case (HI-01), C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), and David Trone (MD-06).
