WILKES-BARRE -- The Luzerne County commissioners honored Jenkins Township
and Gemark Service Corp. Wednesday for their efforts to reduce the waste
stream in the Wyoming Valley. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 County recycling coordinator Ed Latinski said Jenkins Township was lauded
for its voluntary curbside recycling program, while Gemark was selected for
recycling polyester produced in silver reclamation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The township's program, which also serves Laflin and Yatesville, already
has removed 180 tons of recyclables this year from the waste stream, Latinski
said. The tonnage is projected to rise to about 220 tons by the end of the
year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 About 140 tons were collected in 1989, when the program began, Latinski
said. The township collects glass, plastic, bi-metal cans and aluminum cans in
a commingled state, and picks up newspapers and cardboard separately. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gemark, located in Exeter, originated in Newburgh, N.Y., as a silver
reclamation plant, Latinski said. The silver is reclaimed from film used for
X-rays and lithographs in the photographic industry, and the process leaves
large amounts of polyester. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The polyester was taken to landfillsuntil two years ago, when Gemark
devised a way to clean up the polyester waste and sell it back to the plastic
manufacturer for reuse, Latinski said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gemark began production in June 1991 and has recycled 1,750 tons of
polyester and 132 tons of cardboard, Latinski said.
