 WHITE HAVEN -- Coughlin golf Coach Tom Tryba wanted his team to shoot
around a 320 on the first day of play in the Wyoming Valley Conference golf
playoffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Friday, his team obliged as the top four Crusaders turned in a combined
score of 320 at the par-72 Mountain Laurel Golf Club and took a 20-stroke lead
heading into Monday's final round of competition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'd feel more comfortable if it were 40," said Tryba. "We've lost leads
like that before in these two-day competitions, so we know it could happen." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hazleton Area is in second place in the four-team battle with a 340, while
Hoban is third at 344 and Lehman is fourth at 372. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The four teams will play 18 holes again Monday at Mill Race, beginning at
noon. The winning team will be crowned the WVC champions and then play the
Lackawanna League champs on Thursday, Oct. 22, at par-71 Fox Hill Country Club
in Exeter for the District 2 title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mark Zabriski captured medalist honors on the day and led the Crusaders
with a 74. Also scoring for Coughlin were Jim Salus with a 78, Duane Fall with
an 80 and late-season addition Jason Jackiewicz with an 88. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I've played here before, so I know the course," said Zabriski, a Coughlin
senior. "I didn't think I'd play quite that well, but everything came together
nicely today, especially my drives and putts." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jonathan Kernis led Hazleton with a 76, while Matt Folk with an 87, Mike
Leib with an 88 and John Moyer with an 89 also scored for the Cougars. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Kernis did better than I expected and my first two (Moyer and Folk) didn't
do as well as I had hoped," Hazleton Coach Del Kelshaw said. "We wanted about
a 335 coming in, so we were only a little off. Hopefully, we'll play better
Monday." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ryan Kearn led Bishop Hoban, the WVC Division II champs, with a 79. The
other scorers for the Argents were Justin Langer with an 80, Kevin Deibert
with an 87 and Bob Bell with 98. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It'll be hard to catch up, but we're not out of this yet," Hoban Coach Art
Brunn Jr. said. "Scores should be higher because of the weather, which will
help us out." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Weather reports for Monday that the coaches have heard call for cold
temperatures and rain with a possibility of snow. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nikki Sennett led Lehman with a 90, while Rob Trescavage followed with a
91, Ray Bartosh carded a 93 and Jeff Farley carded a 98. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Despite trailing by 52 points, Lehman Coach Mike Sharock said he was "just
happy to be here." The Black Knights, who finished the season at 10-4, are
making their first appearance in postseason play.
