SCRANTON -- Lake-Lehman's Brian Kelly has been the dominant soccer player
in Northeast Pennsylvania for the past four seasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hanover Area's Julia Laiuvara has been equally impressive in track during
the past three, and she'll be back next season to continue her brilliant
career. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On Monday, both were honored as the Northeastern Pennsylvania High School
Male and Female Athlete of the Year as presented by WWDL-FM and WICK-AM. The
awards ceremony was held at the Lackawanna Station Hotel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The radio stations sponsored an Athlete of the Month award from September
to May. A panel of area media voted each month. The winners were then eligible
for Athlete of the Year Award, with the same panel voting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kelly, who was not present at the luncheon, was the Athlete of the Month in
October. He was the first player to be named the soccer MVP in the Wyoming
Valley Conference three straight years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year Kelly led the conference with 45 goals. He leaves as the
conference's career leading scorer with 111 goals. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kelly also had 44 career assists. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He's the epitome of a team player," said Lake-Lehman assistant coach Jim
Welby, who accepted the award for Kelly. "This shows what you can accomplish
as a team player." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kelly beat out such area stars as Berwick's Ron Powlus, the Notre
Dame-bound quarterback who led the Bulldogs to a state title; and GAR's
Bryandt Shelly, who won a state championship in the triple jump. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is a surprise," Welby said. "To be named the best in Northeast
Pennsylvania is the icing on the cake (for Kelly)." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kelly will continue his career at Duke University. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Laiuvara, who was the Athlete of the Month for April, won her third
straight state track title in the 300-meter hurdles this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She also defended her District 2 Class AA titles in the 100- and 200-meter
dash, the 400-meter run and the 300-meter hurdles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I was very happy to win the award," Laiuvara said. "The girls from
Scranton, I don't hear much about. But I know (Wyoming Valley West's) Kristin
(Stretanski) is a great swimmer." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Besides Stretanski, who captured several district and state medals, other
female athletes nominated included Lake-Lehman's Nikki Sennett, who won the
District 2 championship in golf; and Lackawanna Trail field hockey star
Heather Hess.
