Spirit of Thanksgiving makes its presence felt &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 (EDITORIAL) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Thanksgiving usually is the sunniest of holidays. But for those of us at
The &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Times Leader, clouds will veil even the brightest sunshine today, as our
thoughts turn from happy talk and pumpkin pie and come to rest on
JackColleague Jack Federspiel won't be spending Thanksgiving in Wilkes-Barre
this year. He, his wife, and their two boys will be in a little room in the
Philadelphia Children's Hospital. With them will be their winsome daughter, 8,
who is gently surrendering after a three-year battle with lukemia. Doctors
fear she may not see Christmas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 How hard it is to be thankful sometimes. Even those of us whose families
are healthy know we're only one fall, one car crash, one virus away from
bottomless grief. The knowledge dogs us like a shadow, tightening our smiles
and catching each laugh in our throats like a sob. For we know each smile and
laugh could be our last for a long, long time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wednesday's paper (like most) stung us with the little needle of that
awareness. "Mississippi brothers died as they lived -- inseparable," the
headline read. In the heartbreaking story that followed, a minister eulogized,
"There is a lesson to be learned for all of us: Children are a precious
treasure that is bestowed on us ... Lavish them with love because you never
know when they will be taken from us." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With such bittersweet thoughts; with life often so tragic, and always so
uncertain; with a beloved colleague and his family holding back tears -- how
hard, indeed, it is to be thankful sometimes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But oh. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Oh, the sweet that softens the bitter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For the greatest mystery about life isn't grief. It isn't tragedy. It's
love -- the one constant, the one link with our ancestors, the one emotion
that lifts humanity skyward above the animals. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the depths of our sorrow, someone sends us a card. At the height of our
pain, someone cools our brow. And right out of the blue, for no reason
whatsoever, a young son toddles over and looks up for a hug. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Think of the incalculable hardships people have suffered throughout
history: slavery, the Inquisition, the Holocaust. What did those horrendous
tradedies have in common? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They lost. Love won. Love triumphed. And humanity survived; to stumble
again, true, but also to telephone friends and to dandle grandchildren and to
say the words, "I do." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That, in the end, is the wonder of all wonders. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's reason enough to dab your eyes today for sheer gratitude. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To Jack: Just as you touched us with your strength as a parent, so, too,
has Laura touched us with her incredible grace under fire. That's true even
for people who never met her -- a group which now may include the 150,000
people reading this article. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We're thankful for you, Jack. We're thankful for your kindliness. We're
thankful to know you and your family and especially your lovely daughter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And to the rest of us... &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. There's a break in the clouds, and who knows? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The sun might peek through after all.
