THANKSGIVING SPIRIT &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Volunteers brighten holiday for needy &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; St. Vincent dePaul's &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kitchen serving up meal with all the trimmings &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Twenty-three turkeys, 200 pounds of mashed potatoes, gallons of gravy, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 mountains of peas and carrots, and plenty of pies will be served for
Thanksgiving today by volunteers at St. Vincent dePaul Kitchen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The volunteers will prepare and distribute enough food for 275 people,
including 75 homebound residents, said coordinator Anne McCawley. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year is the first time the kitchen, founded in 1983, will provide a
large number of Thanksgiving dinners for shut-ins, McCawley said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Each Thanksgiving I get about a half dozen calls asking if they could get
a meal delivered," McCawley said. "So we're trying it. If it works, it does.
If it doesn't, we tried." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The food will be heated at the center. About 10 volunteers will deliver the
meals to homebound residents of Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke, Dallas and Dupont,
McCawley said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As Jeanette Brader, 72, stood at a dining room table Wednesday and carved
turkey, she said she gets pleasure from volunteering. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Brader, a volunteer at St. Vincent dePaul for nine years, said she was one
of the first to give her time when the kitchen opened its doors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I like to volunteer because I like working with the poor, and they need
the help," Brader said. "They are grateful for every kind word or kind deed
you do." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although there hasn't been a substantial increase in the number of people
served, there has been a change in the kinds of people who come for meals at
the kitchen, workers and an administrator said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One worker, who declined to give her name, said the people they feed are
not always homeless and jobless. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "A lot of the people work but come here to eat because they're on a
budget," she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The kitchen feeds more families these days, McCawley said, citing the
economy as a reason. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's difficult to raise a family, pay rent and eat," McCawley said.
"People can't make ends meet on minimum wage." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
