HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Phyllis Mundy hadn't heard that any former
Ross-Perot-for-president supporters had planned to protest pay raises for
state legislators on the state Capitol steps Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But she said if they were, they were wasting their time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "I have heard absolutely no discussion of a pay raise," the Kingston
Democrat said. "In fact, many of us in caucus have asked if one is going to be
brought up, and we have said `If it is, count me out.' I wouldn't support it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The rumor was out months ago. It would be prime time after the election for
legislators to vote themselves a pay hike. Democratic representatives Kevin
Blaum, of Wilkes-Barre, and Thomas M. Tigue, of Hughestown, repeatedly denied
there was any talk of such a scheme. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We've got to deny something that doesn't even exist," Blaum said Monday.
"It's a shame." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Republican Rep. George C. Hasay, from Shickshinny, has strongly opposed
such a measure in the past as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Aides at the Capitol agree that most of the legislators aren't inclined to
favor giving themselves a raise this year for a number of reasons, not the
least of which is that Gov. Robert P. Casey has said he would veto it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Nope, ain't gonna happen," said Tim Potts, spokesman for House Majority
Leader H. William DeWeese, D-Waynesburg. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's not the time. It wouldn't have the support," Blaum said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "So why even discuss it?" asked Mundy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the Perotistas' statement was specific. It was a planned 27 percent
hike of the legislators' $47,000 annual salaries that was going to get members
of the state chapter of their group, United We Stand-America, out to the
Capitol for a protest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 About 40 of them showed up at noon waving placards, according to The
Associated Press. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mundy said she didn't know where the group got its figures. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I am flabbergasted that they would come out with a specific percentage,"
she said. "It almost seems to me it's a preventative measure." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Indeed it is, said Grier Haslam, chairman of the state chapter of United We
Stand-America. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Haslam said members of his group "had some information" that such a pay
raise "was discussed." He declined to say who discussed the planned raise or
how the group found out about it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We thought the best tactic would be to bring it to light," said Haslam,
adding that his group is "a citizens' action organization." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You never know what would happen if we stood back and didn't do anything
about it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Mundy said the protest would have little, if any, effect on a
legislature preoccupied with the contentious issue of revising worker's
compensation laws before the legislative year ends on Nov. 30. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Protesting something that doesn't exist, that's interesting," Mundy said.
"You would think that they would be using their time in more productive ways,
such as protesting the lack of a worker's comp compromise." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
