 Santa has his elves. But local retailers must hire additional part-time
employees to help them handle the holiday rush. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Most of the salespeople hired to handle holiday business are already
trained and in place, according to the retailers and area job center
officials. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Our hiring process starts in August," said Wayne Holben, director of
public relations for Hess's Department Stores, Inc. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Most of the retail hiring is already accomplished," said Joe Warmus,
manager of the Wyoming Valley Job Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Similarly, Boscov's Department Store in downtown Wilkes-Barre already is in
high gear for the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We've hired about 80 people -- about the same as last year," said Carol
Siberski, Boscov's human resources manager. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One such worker is Ellen Morgan, of Nanticoke, who works in the local
Boscov's lingerie department. Morgan, actually retired from Boscov's in April
of 1991 after seven years of service, but signed on for the Christmas selling
season that year and is back for another stint this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What keeps bringing her back? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I sort of get lonely for people," she said. "And although it's hard work,
I love it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although USA Today recently reported that seasonal hirings are up 5 percent
to 10 percent this year, most local stores appear to be sticking with the plan
they used last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An exception is the J.C. Penney store at the Wyoming Valley Mall, which
hired 70 temporary workers, up 10 from last year, according to Jay Lazar,
store manager. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Most temporary workers hired by Penney's will work through Christmas, Lazar
said. "But we usually keep 15 to 20 percent," after the holidays due to
attrition, he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We like to hold on to the real good performers." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wages for temporary workers at J.C. Penney are "entry level," averaging
$4.50 to $5.50 an hour, Lazar said. But the store often pays higher wages when
it hires people with experience. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lazar said the hiring increase at Penney's is due to several factors,
including an already strong sales year and anticipation of a strong Christmas
season.
