Paper strike outcome not what was intended &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 (EDITORIAL) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Resumes usually trickle into The Times Leader's newsroom at the rate of a
few a week. But a few days ago, a bound sheaf as thick as a big-city telephone
book crossed the newsroom transom, and landed on the editor's desk with a
thump"Recruitment Guide," reads the cover of the inch-and-a-half-thick
document, "to the skills and achievements of the staff of The Pittsburgh
Press." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Therein lies a story. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pittsburgh newspaper strike began six months ago like legendary strikes
of old: with high anger and lofty rhetoric on both sides, and much talk of
"greed" and "justice" and "fairness." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the strike likely will end in a gritty, down-to-earth manner unique to
the competitive '80s and '90s. The Pittsburgh Press, America's 51st-largest
newspaper and one of two papers in the strike, stands a good chance of being
closed. Hundreds if not thousands of workers will have neither a better
contract nor a worse contract. They'll have no contract. Period. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Like a huge and hungry snake, the strike will have eaten its young. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The story of the Pittsburgh strike is complicated and needn't be detailed
here. Suffice to review that certain unions went on strike in May, shutting
down the city's two dailies, the Press and the Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh
essentially has been without a daily newspaper since. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Scripps Howard Co., owner of the dominant and profitable Press, decided
to cut its now-huge losses by selling the paper. The owner of the rival
Post-Gazette is expected to buy. Then that owner is expected to cinch his
monopoly by shutting the Press down. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The expectation is so great that Press workers already are looking for
work. Hence the bound sheaf of 160 newsroom resumes, complete with an
introductory letter from the editor, that came to The Times Leader recently. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The sheaf is one of the saddest documents any journalist is likely to see.
The Press reporters and editors are almost uniformly middle-aged, deeply
rooted in Pittsburgh -- and among the best in their field in the country. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Several resumes hold entries like the following: "1986 Pulitzer Prize. 1991
George Polk Award. 1992 National Public Service Award, Society of Professional
Journalists," the Oscar, Emmy and Tony awards of the industry. Virtually all
list awards and other achievements younger reporters can only dream of. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And now these seasoned pros find themselves trekking to places like
Wilkes-Barre to find work, and to other, even smaller markets which they'd
thought they'd left behind years ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This wasn't quite what workers intended when they took up the picket signs
in May. But as Greyhound Co. bus drivers, Eastern Air Lines workers, federal
air-traffic controllers and other ill-fated strikers in the past decade
discovered, it's what they got. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The lesson is clear. Workers and management alike depend entirely on one
thing: a healthy company. And in the 1990s, with hungry competitors everywhere
stropping their blades, few U.S. companies can afford the profit-sapping
hostility of traditional labor relations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The new game must be teamwork. The new labor relation must be partnership. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fat cat or field hand, you forget that at your peril. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
