 DUNMORE -- Like his hero Walter Payton, Jim Pizano is a little guy with a
lot of heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And if you take him lightly, he may just bowl you over. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pizano's 35-yard touchdown burst midway through the fourth quarter gave
Wyoming Area a 20-14 upset victory Friday over Dunmore in a first round
District 2 Class AA Playoff Game at V. James Gatto Memorial Stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "A lot of times I like the element of surprise," said Pizano, a 5-foot-10,
175-pound junior tailback. "Guys coming at me think I'm going for the
sidelines to get out of bounds and I like to pop back in, like Payton." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No tricks necessary on his gamewinner, though. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On fourth-and-inches, Pizano whipped straight ahead for the first down,
made a neat little cut and darted untouched into the end zone for his second
touchdown of the game to give the Warriors their first postseason victory
since 1983. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I was actually looking for the pop from their linebacker," said Pizano,
who finished with a season-high 178 yards on 34 carries. "Then I saw the cut.
When I popped my head up, I didn't see anything. I just turned it on and went
as hard as I could." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He is as tough a running back as there is in the area," Wyoming Area Coach
Paul Marranca said. "We were going fourth-and-one. A lot of times, once you
get by the first wave, it's clear sailing." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The game-winning play allowed the Warriors, 7-5 overall, to cruise into
next week's District 2 Class AA championship game, against either Carbondale
or Hanover Area, at 11:05 a.m. next Saturday at Lackawanna County Stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I don't care who we play," Marranca said. "I'm just glad we're there." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For much of the second half, it didn't look like Wyoming Area was going to
quite make it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dunmore, heavily favored with an 8-3 record coming in, unleashed a dynamic
passing attack in the second half that appeared to strike hopes of victory
from Warrior hearts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bucks quarterback Jack Dempsey launched a beautiful 38-yard pass to Scott
Hartshorn on Dunmore's opening drive of the second half, then completed the
march with an 18-yard scoring strike to Ryan Quigley as Dunmore took a 7-6
lead. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Moments later, Wyoming Area lost a fumble, and Dempsey cashed it in. The
junior quarterback rifled a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jim Forgione that gave
Dunmore a 14-6 lead with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter and left the
Warriors looking stunned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So Marranca issued a challenge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He said to us that the guys' backs are against the wall, just fight out,"
Pizano said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So the Warrior offense struck its best battle stance. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Trailing 14-6, Pizano ripped off an 11-yard gain that saw him driving a
pile of Dunmore defenders backwards. Later, quarterback Tom Campenni hit a
diving John Morgan for a 12-yard completion. And Campenni snapped off a
perfect strike as he found Nick Aritz inches in front of his defender on a
41-yard scoring strike. That got the Warriors close, 14-12. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then during crunch time, Pizano carried twice for 10 yards, and later,
quarterback Tom Campenni found enough time to hit John Morgan with a
third-down pass that gained nearly 10 yards. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Inches short of the first down, Pizano got the call, and he knew exactly
where to go to set off a wild celebration among Wyoming Area fans. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Second half, we got behind, I think our kids met the challenge," Marranca
shrugged. "I think our offensive line is starting to play much better.
Dunmore's a tough team. We just thought our size would wear them down." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Give credit to the offensive line," Pizano insisted. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Warrior offense started slowly, as Wyoming Area failed to take
advantage of some big early breaks. Dunmore lost two fumbles in its own
territory, but kept the Warriors from cracking the scoreboard. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You've got to be able to capitalize, but we didn't do it," Marranca said.
"Give credit to Dunmore." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the Warriors finally caught a break they could use. They turned a short
Dunmore punt into points, moving just 33 yards to take a 6-0 lead. Pizano
carried four times for 16 of those yards, the last being a two-yard touchdown
run which happened only because of his fine second effort. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Early in the year he played hurt," Marranca said of his bread-and-butter
back. "He's healthy now." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
