 Wilkes University women's basketball coach Karen Haag gets a little
flustered every time she hears somebody say the Colonels are going to finish
last in the Middle Atlantic Conference Northwest Section. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm not thrilled about that and I don't think that's going to be the way
things pan out," Haag said. "I'm not predicting a 20-win season like my buddy
up the street (King's coach Robin Cummins), but we're not going to finish on
the bottom of the league. I don't think it's going to happen." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes finished 8-14 overall last season, but 1-9 in section play. Haag
feels that won't happen again for several reasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One is the return of Missie Chinchar, a 5-foot-10 senior. She was an MAC
All-Star last season who averaged 17.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per games.
Chinchar is 71 points short of 1,000 for her career. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also returning are: Stacey Boyer, a 5-8 junior; Becky Fox, a 5-8 junior;
and Tammy Palmer, a 5-4 sophomore. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Last year we were competitive with every team and we only had eight kids,"
Haag said. "The freshmen that are coming in need seasoning, but we've got some
players. They're pretty savvy young ladies." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes has 10 new players in the program and some should help right away. A
former Bishop O'Reilly star who should help Wilkes is 5-8 freshman forward Lee
Ann Azarewicz. Her play in practice has already earned her the nickname
"Vanilla Thunder." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Other freshmen who could step in right away are 6-0 center Wendy O'Connor,
5-7 guard Jamie Land, 5-6 guard Erica Kramer and 5-7 guard Michelle Shafer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 "We have some talented, talented athletes," Haag said. "They have to become
comfortable and gain confidence. Once they get into the comfort zone, you're
going to see some really good stuff from them."
