Marywood still hopeful despite two key losses &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Despite the unexpected loss of two outstanding starters, the Marywood
College women's basketball team hopes to be competitive this seasonThe Pacers,
coming off a 17-9 campaign, hope to be in the thick of the race in the
Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Northern Division with Misericordia, Cedar
Crest, Beaver and Alvernia. This is the first season for the PAC. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Marywood, which opens its season Saturday at Gwynedd-Mercy, also hopes to
give local rivals King's, Wilkes and Scranton a battle in regular season
games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pacers will be without Sandy Reno and Becki Howard this season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Reno, the 1991-92 Most Valuable Player of the Eastern States Athletic
Conference (the league Marywood was in last season), is passing up her senior
year due to personal reasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Howard, who ranked third last season in NCAA Division III in 3-point
shooting, will miss the season for medical reasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Any time that you lose two players the caliber of Sandy and Becki, it is
obviously going to hurt," Marywood coach Jerry Dempsey said. "But, what you
have to do is come up with a way to be successful with the players that you do
have. Therefore, I remain optimistic because the players are working extremely
hard and we have found some good things that these people can do as a unit to
make this a very good season." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pacers have five returning players from last year's squad. The leader
of this pack is 5-foot-11 senior forward Tracie Rieder. She currently ranks
third on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,166 points and is second on
the all-time rebounding list with 819 boards. Last season, Rieder averaged
15.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also returning up front are Jill Harvilchuk, a 5-9 senior forward, and
Karen Bonieski, a 5-11 senior center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At the guard positions, 5-8 junior Megan McHale is back along with 5-8
sophomore Pam Willmot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All played vital roles last season, when Marywood made it all the way to
the finals of the ESAC playoffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The experience that these five players have is going to go a long way in
determining just how successful we will be," Dempsey said. "We have a very
good group of freshmen and the promising thing is that all the players are
working hard together. The veterans are providing the leadership and the young
players are learning from them." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pacers open PAC Northern play at Alvernia on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Their
home opener is at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 against Wilkes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It is very refreshing to be playing in a new conference," Dempsey said.
"We will always have fond memories of the ESAC because our program grew as the
conference grew. We were members of the ESAC when it was only in its second
year and saw it grow into an established conference, but it was not feasible
to be a member anymore. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Timing is everything and the PAC meets the needs of our athletic program
at this time perfectly. It is very exciting."
