 People who have seen Molly Kauffman during the past few days say this is
the happiest the Crestwood High School senior has been in months. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Brace yourself for this: the reason for her joy is a lightweight hunk of
plastic and metal that costs about $500. That support, however, has allowed
her to return to playing field hockey. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After missing the entire regular season with a serious knee injury,
Kauffman will be back on the field for Sunday's Wyoming Valley Conference
Field Hockey Coaches Association Senior All-Star game. The game starts at 1
p.m. at Lackawanna County Stadium in Moosic. Parking at the stadium is $1, and
admission is a donation of $1. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm really thrilled for her," Crestwood Coach Elvetta Gemski, who is also
a coach for the East squad, said of Kauffman. "She's put in a lot of hard work
to get back." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kauffman is one of three goalies on the East squad, which will take on
senior All-Stars from the West. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When I came into the locker room after I first got my brace, I was
screaming `I got my brace, I got my brace!' " Kauffman said "People were
telling me they hadn't seen me this happy since last year." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kauffman tore apart her left knee playing soccer last spring. She had major
reconstructive surgery, then started the long and arduous rehabilitation
process. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Actually, it was supposed to take about nine months," Kauffman said. "This
is about six months. So I kind of beat the clock on that one." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kauffman couldn't beat the clock, though, on Crestwood's season. She had
hoped to return to play for the Comets late in the season, but couldn't make
it back. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "That kind of crushed me," Kauffman said. "You don't know how hard it was.
I don't know of any athlete who can just sit and watch a game. It was so hard
for me, especially when we played big games." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yet Kauffman swallowed her pain, and acting as the team's scorekeeper, sat
and watched in support of her teammates. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Every step of the way," Gemski said. "She was an excellent captain and
gave us moral support. She was a great leader off the field for us." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kauffman acted as a coach for fellow senior Jen Aigeldinger, who replaced
her in the cage. If Aigeldinger was doing something wrong, Kauffman would
point it out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Aigeldinger finished the season as one of the WVC's top goalies and has
said Kauffman played a big part in her success. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Jen and I work so close together, it was like me being out there with
her," Kauffman said. "Jen did so great for the team." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Aigeldinger and Kauffman, who both hope to continue their field hockey
careers in college, will get playing time in Sunday's game. College coaches
from around the country are expected to attend the event. At least one coach
has called ahead and asked if Kauffman will be playing in the contest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Why? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Well, as a junior, she established herself as one of the best high school
goalies in the country. That's not an exaggeration, either. Members of the
coaching staff of the U.S. National Field Hockey Team picked her out as
somebody they feel has the potential to play at the international level
someday, if she chooses to pursue that course. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kauffman's reputation, along with her contributions off the field, helped
land her a spot on the roster of the East squad even though she hadn't played
during the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Needless to say, everything feels great," Kauffman said. "It feels
amazing. Everybody was worried at the first practice that I was going to
injure myself again. It didn't even feel like it was there." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even when Kauffman was picked to play in the All-Star game, it was
uncertain if she would be able to play. She didn't get her doctor's OK to play
until Monday, Nov. 9. Ironically, that was the day before Crestwood was
eliminated from the state playoffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "All I had to do was get fitted for my brace," Kauffman said. "I got my
brace and now I'm ready to play."
