Kids win with the 'write stuff' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 A Book Contest meet Friday night at the library to read their award-winning

 Alligators, puppies and enchanted meadows come alive in the work of some
very talented children &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 KINGSTON -- Deidre Bird-Kellystepped in front of the audience, sat on a
small black chair and began to read her awarding-winning book, "Allie
Alligator." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Her mother, Donyn Bird, of Mountaintop, watched approvingly with her Nikon
camera ready. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deidre, 7, was one of three students who won first place blue ribbons at
the Hoyt Library's Sixth Annual Write and/or Illustrate a Book Contest and
will have their books published in April. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deidre placed first in the first/second grade division. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Each time Deidre held the book in front of her face, showing 40 people in
the audience the drawings of Allie, her feet began to swing. A soft smile
revealed a dimple in her cheek. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She seemed to be a proud author and illustrator. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Allie Alligator is not so proud -- at first anyway. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He wants to be a bird. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Imagine that," Deidre read. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then he wants to be a turtle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Imagine that," Deidre read. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Donyn Bird said her daughter entered the contest last year and always has
loved writing and drawing. And has a feel for real-life situations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Allie, a boy alligator, eventually meets a "girl" alligator. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Allie decides it's OK to be an alligator. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Imagine that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Melissa Minetola, 9, of Luzerne, a first place winner in the third/fourth
grade category, wrote a book, "Boris Takes Over," about a troublesome puppy
that eventually finds a home. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm extremely proud of her," said Lenora Minetola, Melissa's mother. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "She likes to write ... She keeps a daily journal." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Melissa entered the contest because she likes to write about animals and
their adventures, she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Diane Hoffman, 12, of Kingston, was the winner in the fifth/sixth grade
category. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Her book, "The Open Meadow," is about two girls who find an enchanted
meadow. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With intricate illustrations, Diane's book had viewers marveling at her
artistic talents. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Maryann Hovan, children's librarian, said she remembers when Diane was very
young and her mother would pick out books about drawing for her. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A parent, admiring Diane's artwork, said quietly, "If she doesn't do
something with her talent for art, she's crazy." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Diane said she loves to draw. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But she wants to be an attorney.
