Bank's new owners must live up to their promises &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 (EDITORIAL) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Two paragraphs in Wednesday's story about the upcoming sale of Franklin
First bank said it all: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Franklin... will keep its name, its Pennsylvania charter, its community
banking orientation, its board of directors and its officers"All 350 Franklin
employees will keep their jobs and Franklin will continue its current level of
contributions to community charities." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No Wyoming Valley resident could ask for much more than that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Franklin First's officers seem to have accepted an engagement ring from a
worthy suitor. ONBANCorp. of Syracuse, N.Y., will come to the valley with a
fine reputation for fiscal prudence and community responsibility. We heartily
welcome them as a new member of the region's business family. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All we ask is that they keep their promises. We in Coal Country have been
misled too often and for too long not to be a mite suspicious of "suits"
making pledges. ONBANCorp. executives need to realize the utter seriousness of
their words. When they promise no layoffs, that means 350 breadwinners sleep
easier tonight, knowing their children won't go hungry anytime in the near
future. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Such a promise is more than mere words. It's an oath. It's a vow not to
tear our already-frayed social contract even further. Lives depend on such
promises, as does the health of our community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As Benjamin Franklin himself said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly
we shall all hang separately." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But we trust ONBANCorp. executives will keep their word. On that basis, the
reality is that Franklin First has gained a new and exceptionally healthy
owner, and for that all our readers should be glad.
