Shrinkage of military ought to be supported &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes-Barre would be badly hurt by the shut-down of the local Military &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Entrance Processing Station. Dozens of good-paying jobs would be lost.
Sales of everything from cars to groceries to, yes, newspapers would dropBut
that's not reason enough to keep the station open. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Defense Department is debating whether or not to close the station, a
news story on Thursday reported. Our feeling is this: The station should stay
open if and only if its presence is needed for the military preparedness of
the United States -- period, end of argument. That's the standard virtually
everyone in Wilkes-Barre expects the Defense Department to use when it opens
or closes stations elsewhere. We can expect no less where our own station is
concerned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To feel otherwise is to expect a city-wide welfare payment from the
government of the United States. For if the Wilkes-Barre station were kept
open despite proof of its expendability, that's exactly what its annual $2
million payroll would be: welfare. It would be a transfer payment from the
American taxpayer to Northeastern Pennsylvania with little promise of benefit
in return. We in the Wyoming Valley are better than that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Don't misunderstand. The Times Leader strongly supports our local MEPS.
Dozens of employees here, as well as their sons and daughters, walked through
those portals in what is one of America's most memorable rites-of-passage for
youth. (Few veterans will forget the feeling of staring at the floor, shoulder
to shoulder with other inductees, while a doctor strolled behind the lineup
checking for hemorrhoids. In the words of the old song, "You're in the Army
now.") &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Wilkes-Barre MEPS has ably served a critical and honorable function in
the defense of our country. And if the Defense Department decides that
Harrisburg or Syracuse are too distant to process local recruits, then by all
means, the Wilkes-Barre station should stay open. This newspaper would be the
first to celebrate that decision. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the United States military is shrinking. Every Armed Service is trying
to save money. We in Wilkes-Barre should welcome this trend, not decry it,
even when the shrinkage starts to hit home.
