The 1992-93 Wyoming Valley Conference boys' swimming season will swing into
high gear Tuesday with a full schedule of action. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The league picked up a new team with the addition of a boys' program at
Hazleton, but lost another when Wyoming Seminary was forced to drop its
program due to low turnout. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nanticoke should stay in the league, but it's a question mark right now
whether the Trojans will field a male-only team or co-ed team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's postseason competition for districts and states will feature
team competition broken down into Class AAA and AA for the first time. The new
format will mean more swimmers now have a chance at making states, but it will
not affect the regular season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Overall, expect Wyoming Valley West to repeat as league champs. The
Spartans have a combination of talent and depth that is unmatched in the WVC. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tuesday's schedule features six meets, highlighted by last year's league
and district champion Wyoming Valley West at Meyers with a 4:30 p.m. start.
Other matches include (starting time is 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted):
Hazleton at Abington Heights, Berwick at Tunkhannock, Dunmore at Nanticoke,
Scranton at Hanover and Scranton Prep at West Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Valley View and Bishop Hoban (originally slated to face Seminary) have a
bye. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The opening match of the season, Hanover at Dunmore, was scheduled for last
Friday but was postponed due to the snow storm. No makeup date has yet been
announced. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Here's a look at the league in predicted order of finish: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1.Valley West &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Jason Pevear (diving, sr.); Josh Evans (diving, sr.); Chris Arnone (diving,

 Developing depth to fill roles of eight swimmers lost to graduation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The attitude here is tremendous. These kids are as hungry as last year's
group. The new system of AA and AAA teams will create more opportunities for
more kids to make states, but the head-to-head competition we've faced in the
past won't be there this year." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Despite the losses to graduation, Valley West should rule the pool once
again. The Spartans have a combination of quality and depth no other team can
match. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 2.Bishop Hoban &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Some experience -- four returning seniors and a returning diver for first
time in years, more freshmen than usual &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Team Weaknesses: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Making up for the loss of two district champs and other quality swimmers &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "With so many new kids, it's hard to tell. We open Thursday with Valley
West and have Berwick on the 22nd, so we have two of our toughest meets before
Christmas. We hope to end up about the same as last season." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hoban's big challenge this season will be to finish best-of-the-rest behind
Valley West. It won't be easy, but you have to give the Argents the edge until
somebody can prove they can knock them out of the No. 2 spot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 3.Berwick &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 "We're looking forward to a good season. We should be at least as good as

 Berwick should be strong in freestyle events. Whether or not that is good
enough to propel them higher than third remains to be seen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 4.Abington Hts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Lots of senior talent and lots of freshmen and sophomores that can develop
into highly competitive swimmers &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Team Weaknesses: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 First-year coach Friedlin, who previously coached at Scranton Prep, says
it's too early to tell &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm excited about being the new coach here. We should be able to at least
equal last year's record. Our toughest meets will probably be with Abington's
perennial rivals like Berwick and Scranton Prep." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Look for Copley to be one the league's top distance freestylers. Kieffer
could be a top competitor in the breastroke. Overall, Abington should figure
in the chase for second place. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 5.Scranton Prep &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 9-3-0 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Lots of depth, a few outstanding swimmers with experience &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Don't have a lot of depth in distance events &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're shooting for 10-3, 9-4, something like that. Of course will face the
ususal challenges of Hoban, Valley West, Berwick and Abington, but if our
young kids come along, we will be able to challenge them." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gallagher, Keeler and possibly Hogan could rate as top swimmers in the
league. That and depth should keep Prep in the pool with every team in the
league except Valley West. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 6.Tunkhannock &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 7-5-1 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 "We need a year to grow. We have some swimmers who are still learning the
fundamentals. We'll be content to finish around .500." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When Shartle previously coached at Tunkhannock in the `80s, his teams were
known for coming through with big performances at districts. The Tigers should
be a middle-of-the-pack team during the year, but keep an eye on what they do
at districts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 7.Hazleton Area &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Competed in exhibition meets last season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pat Garramone &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Making waves: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jason Reiff (all events, sr.); Todd Dietrick (all events, jr.); Jason
Dietrick (all events, jr.); Harold Albertson (freestyle and breaststroke,
soph.); Steve Ciarimbole (breaststroke and butterfly, jr.); and Chris Mears

 Team strengths: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Thirty candidates with a lot of desire. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Team Weakness: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Inexperience -- most of team has never competed before. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're going to take it one step at a time. It's a learning process for
most of the swimmers, but we'll be there until the end." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Reiff had some decent times last season in sprint freestyle. Overall, look
for Hazleton's numbers to pay off with some victories. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 8.Meyers &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 7-7-0 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Lack of numbers will hurt the Mohawks, but they've got enough talent to
stay around .500 this season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 9.Scranton &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 2-10-1 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jerry Brier and Bruce Butler (asst.) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Based on performances from last year's District 2 championship meet, top
performers for Scranton could be senior George May; juniors Kevin Janeski,

 Still not a large group of experienced swimmers (one-third of team has no
prior experience). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 "We're looking forward to our first ever .500 season. That's our main goal
this year, and we have a very good chance of that happening." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Getting a .500 season would be a nice achievement for the Hawkeyes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 11.Valley View &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

performers for the Cougars could be senior Ernie Andreoli, junior Dave

Tara Halloran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As usual, Valley View should be one of the top co-ed teams swimming in the
boys' league. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Invaders have a chance to improve on last year's mark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 13.Dunmore &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 A good, solid bunch of kids with lots of enthusiasm. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Team Weaknesses: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Don't get nearly the practice time of other schools since they swim at the
YMCA, divers have no where to practice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach's comment: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We should surprise the rest of the league this year. We have a strong
foundation and we're looking for tremendous improvement this year. Our kids
are very determined -- the more obstacles they face, the more determined they
get." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Getting a few victories would be a surprise and a step in the right
direction for the program. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nanticoke &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 1991-92 Record: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 2-10-0 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coach: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Debra Kuprinski &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Outlook: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That depends on whether Nanticoke decided to field a boys' team, have a
co-ed team which swims in the boys' league, or field a separate team. Right
now, the school is leaning toward a co-ed team pending school board approval.
