Bill Unsworth's dream season is about to come to an end. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's been a lot of fun," said Unsworth, the former Wilkes University head
coach who is now the offensive coordinator at Gardner-Webb. "It's been like
the endless season. It seems strange it's coming to an end." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But win or lose, Gardner-Webb's season will end with Saturday's NAIA
Division I championship game. Gardner-Webb, located in Boiling Springs, N.C.,
hosts Central State of Wilberforce, Ohio in the championship contest at 1 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unsworth, who resigned under pressure from the Wilkes job in 1989, is in
his second year as an assistant at Gardner-Webb. Following a seven-year stay
at Wilkes, Unsworth was offensive coordinator for the Charlotte Barons of the
Minor League Football System. When that league folded in 1990, he landed the
job at Gardner-Webb. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unsworth still resides in Kingston with his wife during the off season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's one of those dream seasons," Unsworth said of a year in which
Gardner-Webb has won 12 straight games after dropping the opener. "We've
averaged 487 yards a game on offense." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unsworth's run-and-shoot offense has been putting up some incredible
numbers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Usually, the numbers are incredibly good. Gardner-Webb is rolling up 124
yards rushing and 363 passing each contest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "And our starting quarterback has only played in three fourth quarters,"
Unsworth said. "In fact, in one game, we pulled him at halftime." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gardner-Webb's best game was a 69-33 win over Wingat College, located in
North Carolina. Wingat was one of eight nationally-ranked NAIA teams
Gardner-Webb has faced this season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "In that game it was run-and-shoot vs. run-and-shoot," Unsworth said. "It
lasted four hours, four minutes. We led 41-13 at halftime and ended up with
804 yards in total offense." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sometimes, though, the numbers have been bad. Take the 28-21 victory over
Concord College of West Virginia, for example in the first round of the NAIA
playoffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We set a record for football on any level," Unsworth said. "We turned the
ball over 11 times in that game and still won. Nobody has ever done that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We got up 14-0 quickly and then things got ugly. It was in a rainstorm, a
cold nasty rainstorm. The quarterback started throwing up some ducks. He had
nine interceptions." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the semifinals last Saturday, Gardner-Webb beat Shepherd College of West
Virginia, 22-7. Over the past few years, Shepherd has played Shippensburg
University and Millersville University, two NCAA Division II schools in the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They're a good team," Unsworth said of Shepherd. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Central State has a big-name player in Charles Thompson. He is the former
Oklahoma University quarterback who was nailed on drug charges but is now a
starting running back for the NAIA school. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gardner-Webb's marquis player is Rodney Robinson, a Kodak All-America
selection. He has caught 104 passes this season for 1,700 yards and 17
touchdowns. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unsworth said that Robinson is by far the most talented receiver he has
ever coached, even surpassing Tony DiGrazia, a former All-America wide
receiver at Wilkes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "If Tony were playing for us he'd be our other wide receiver," Unsworth
said. "But Rodney is so good and has so much ability that it's scary." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Central State, which won the NAIA title two years ago, is in the finals for
the third straight year. This team has the nation's No. 2 defense and will
give Unsworth's run-and-shoot a tough challenge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But it's one he is anxious to tackle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It should be a lot of fun," Unsworth said. "It's going to be interesting,
that's for sure."
