WILKES-BARRE -- Joseph F. Perugino of Kingston has been federally
recognized as a major general in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Maj. Gen. Perugino has served as deputy commander of Pennsylvania's State
Area Command (STARC) since February 1991. He assists in coordinating all state
Army National Guard activities, including training, operations,
administration, logistical support and maintenance, welfare and mobilization. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He previously served as the Pennsylvania National Guard's assistant
adjutant general. He also commanded the 28th Infantry Division Artillery in
Hershey from 1985 to 1988 and the 1st Battalion 109th Field Artillery in
Wilkes-Barre from 1980 to 1985. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He began his military career with the 109th Field Artillery in 1955,
advancing through the enlisted ranks to sergeant first class. He was
commissioned a second lieutenant in 1966. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Perugino is employed as vice president of marketing and gas supply by
Pennsylvania Gas and Water Co. A graduate of Cumberland University, he has
earned many military decorations and is active in numerous civic and military
organizations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The general has one son, Joseph R., and lives with his wife, Mary Ann, in
Kingston. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
