WILKES-BARRE -- It's "probably very exciting for" women in the armed
services today, said Ann Raynor, who served in India and China during World
War II. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Then about all we had were the nurses and clerks positions," said the
75-year-old Wilkes-Barre resident who served in the Army Nurses Corps in
1945-46. "Now -- good heavens -- they fly and do everything." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Raynor's experiences in the Army involved more than working with the
wounded. "It was tough. There were a lot of parties," Raynor said at a
gathering in honor of women veterans at the Veterans Administration Medical
Center Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When I really worked hard -- I worked in a general hospital in Calcutta,
then a few of us went up to a station hospital in China," she said. "There
were six of us that went up into the northern part of China in a field
hospital." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Due to her late entry into the war, she never got the chance to open a
hospital, only to shut them down. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When we were flying into China, we were over the hump when V.J. (Victory
over Japan) Day was announced," Raynor said. "That was the most memorable
moment. It was the end and I was up in the air." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The nearly 70 women veterans meeting Monday in a belated observance of
National Women Veterans Recognition Week, Nov. 8 to 11, said they were glad
the armed services are offering more responsibilities to women. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They have some wonderful opportunities," Raynor said. "They can do
anything they want to do. As long as they have the abilities and talent I see
no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to do anything." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 America's changing attitude toward women's roles in the military could be
heard through the stories of those attending. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's improving," said Angela Drydol, 21, a combat medic in the Army
Reserves, who served during Desert Storm. "For a while there I was the only
female in my section. So, I was running into, `You can't do this.' " &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're getting more females into the service now, which means there's more
in the section, broadening the males' horizon -- realizing that women can do
what they were doing," said Drydol. "We're not these little things that you
put of into a corner." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jackie Woodard, who was a company clerk in an Army Intelligence Company
from 1972 to 1976, said times have changed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When I was in the Army a lot of the things that are open to women now --
weren't then." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Woodard said her duties involved the handling of all the company's
paperwork. "I was the first woman in my company, and the only woman for a long
time," she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Being the only female didn't interfere with her making friends. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I was very fortunate," she said. "The company that I was in was the cream
of the Army. In military intelligence you had the most intellectual people --
they were all like my brothers -- they were a lot of fun." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
