Clinton's inaugural plans bode well for the nation &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 (EDITORIAL) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Just when this country needed an event to bring Americans together in a
spirit of patriotism, fun, and charity, along comes Bill Clinton to make it
all possibleWe're talking about the president-elect's plan to let
rank-and-file Americans join in his inaugural festivities in January. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yes, there will be the usual black tie galas at umpteen hundred dollars a
head, and other formalities at which attendance will be limited to
Washington's movers and shakers and paid for by them. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But there also will be public events, such as the "A Call for Reunion"
concert and fireworks display at the Lincoln Memorial, a presidential Open
House where the public can visit the Clintons at the White House, a parade and
much more -- in all, five days of fun and formality as Clinton accepts the
reins of power from outgoing President George Bush. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The open celebration shows Clinton to be a man of his word, as he promised
repeatedly throughout his campaign that he would foster openness in government
and stay in touch with the people. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Clinton's good idea doesn't stop there. Even better is his cost of
admission to the concert and fireworks -- a donation of food or clothing for
this country's needy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What a neat idea. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What a great way to bring people together, and, at the same time, help
those who have hit upon hard times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What a nifty method of demonstrating to Americans that Washington is their
capital, and that it is the seat of their government, not just that of the
high-powered elected officials and administrators. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There is no question that this nation's presidents must, for security
reasons, keep themselves distanced from the public and remain shielded by
protective forces. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At the same time, they must never become so insulated as to lose touch with
the people. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Clinton's inaugural schedule takes that into account. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Best of all, we're all invited to join in much of the hoopla. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And why not?
