EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rather than watching the offerings on the
pay-per-view channels at the Newark Airport Marriott hotel this weekend, the
Washington Redskins chose to watch a different film before playing the New
York Giants on Sunday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And their choice of viewing proved positively inspiring. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "For some of us who didn't see it during the preseason or training camp, it
was kind of nice to see it," said quarterback Mark Rypien of "March to
Minneapolis," the highlight film of the Redskins' 1991 Super Bowl championship
season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rypien and his teammates responded to their Saturday night viewing of the
film at their hotel by putting together a performance worthy of a championship
season, a 28-10 victory over the Giants that virtually eliminated New York
from the NFC playoff race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I would say the postseason hopes are gone," said Giants Coach Ray Handley,
whose team is 5-8 and in need of a mathematical miracle to make the playoffs.
"I haven't looked at the numbers, but I don't think 8-8's going to do it in
the NFC." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Giants would have to win all their remaining games to go 8-8, while
either Philadelphia or Washington, both 8-5, would have to lose the rest of
their games. Green Bay, now 7-6, would also have to lose two of its final
three games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While Handley -- once again hung in effigy in the Giants Stadium parking
lot before the game -- was issuing his concession speech, the Redskins went
back to Washington secure in the knowledge that they, along with Philadelphia
and Green Bay, were able to win Sunday and remain in excellent shape for a
playoff spot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And maybe, said Rypien, the defending Super Bowl champions can recapture
the magic they saw in last season's highlight film. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You've got to feel good about that and maybe we need to get it back," said
Rypien, who held out during training camp and hadn't seen the film before its
showing at the Redskins' hotel prior to the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You look and you say, `Hey, it's the same group of guys, basically.' And
we've got everybody as healthy as we're going to be," he said. "Last year may
have been one of those years in which everything went the way it went, but I
still feel there are lots of plays to be made." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of the more than 77,000 people who held tickets for Sunday's game, 14,143
did not show up. Many of the 62,998 who did make an appearance chanted the
anti-Handley "Ray Must Go" at one time or another during the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After Washington took a 7-0 lead on Earnest Byner's 1-yard run in the first
quarter, the Giants downed a punt on the Redskins' 3-yard line. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It was an opportunity for the Giants to seize the momentum, but instead,
the Redskins did the seizing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We were in the huddle and we all kind of looked down and said, `97 yards,
let's do it,' " said Jim Lachey, the offensive tackle who returned from a knee
injury for Sunday's game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Statistically, they went 96 yards, gobbling up nearly nine minutes and
taking a 14-point lead 14 plays later, as Byner ran in from 11 yards out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Giants, losers of four straight, got a Ken Willis 43-yard field goal
late in the second quarter. Then, after holding Washington on the first series
of the third quarter, the Giants moved 46 yards, with Rodney Hampton running
in from a yard out to cut the Redskins' lead to 14-10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The crowd was in the game at this point and the "Ray Must Go" chants
subsided somewhat. But then Rypien hit two big passes, of 20 and 17 yards to
Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders, respectively. Shortly thereafter, he threw a
pass to Terry Orr, who rumbled into the end zone from 20 yards out to
basically put the game away. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We held them that first series, we ran the ball effectively and got it in,
but we just couldn't get it back," said Handley. "That changes your game plan
a little when they go up two scores." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Washington got the game's final touchdown when Rypien called an audible and
threw a 45-yard pass to Art Monk, extending the 13-year veteran's streak of
consecutive games in which he has caught a pass to 145 games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Byner ran for 100 yards and Rypien was 15-for-18 for 216 yards passing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With both Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler injured, the Giants had to use
rookie Kent Graham at quarterback for the second week in a row. He completed
eight passes for 73 yards. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Handley said he will evaluate personnel over the final three weeks of the
season, including the possibility of using first-round supplemental draft pick
Dave Brown at quarterback. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I don't know if it will be a start," said Handley. "But obviously, if
we're going to be evaluating players over the next three weeks, one of those
players could and should be Dave Brown." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Handley made some changes prior to Sunday's game, including benching
veteran center Bart Oates for Brian Williams. True to Handley's luck this
year, Williams broke a foot in the game and probably is out for the season.
