By 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, the 90 chairs at St. Vincent dePaul Kitchen
were occupied, and a 30-foot line of hungry diners stretched to the door. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is really a big crowd for Thanksgiving," said kitchen director Anne
Marie McCawley, who expected at least 300 guests for the kitchen's 11th annual
feast. "I'm seeing more families, more children." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Serving dinner until 1 p.m. Thursday, McCawley anticipated a full house to
devour 25, 20-pound turkeys and hundreds of pounds of potatoes and vegetables
and dozens of pies. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We've been seeing more people come to the kitchen," McCawley said after
wishing a guest a `Happy Thanksgiving.' "It's hard to make ends meet. The cost
of living in this area has skyrocketed." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Across the Wyoming Valley, nearly 1,000 lonely, needy people, many of whom
were senior citizens, gathered Thursday at St. Vincent dePaul and area
churches for roast turkey, all the traditional trimmings and fellowship. The
food at each establishment was donated by residents and businesses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "There are other people who are just as lonely as I am and this gathering
brings us together," said 80-year-old Marcella Dunne, after eating a last bite
of raisin pie at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Nanticoke. "I think it's a
remarkable thing." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For 12 years, St. Francis has served meals. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "There's always people alone, so I guess this will go on forever," said St.
Francis cook Tony Volpicelli, 63, a founder of the dinner tradition. "When I'm
gone, somebody else will take over." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Another Thanksgiving ritual is the Naylor-Lemmond Memorial Community
Thanksgiving Dinner at the First United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre.
Thursday marked the event's 22nd year. "Every year when I walk in here I say
`I can't believe another year has gone by,' " said organizer Shawn Murphy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fifty volunteers served platters of turkey and bowls of steaming mashed
potatoes, yams, corn and stuffing to 115 senior citizens. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Since I've been born, this is the Thanksgiving I remember," said
16-year-old Brennan Murphy, a volunteer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For Bill James, 61, this was his first Thanksgiving with the Naylor-Lemmond
families. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I cooked last year, but I thought it would be good to get out with
people," said James, a Wilkes-Barre resident. "It seems each year my family
gets smaller and smaller and smaller." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 170 who visited Forty Fort United Methodist Church not only ate, but
listened to a Thanksgiving tune sung by the church's Brownie members who were
dressed in Pilgrim garb. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We felt it's good for them to see children on a holiday," said Pastor
William Lewis. "There is nothing worse to sit at home with no family and
friends. This removes the depression." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mary Lazar, a senior citizen who lives in Kingston, attended the dinner for
the second year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It gives you a pickup," she said. "You always meet new people. It's better
than staying home." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jim Biehl, 33, who cooked the 10, 20-pound turkeys at Forty Fort United
Methodist Church, has volunteered his time for three years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'd like to think if I'm ever alone when I get old, I'll be able to go to
a place like this and be taken care of."
