HOMETOWN -- Terry McLaughlin is the glue that holds the Marian Catholic
Colts basketball team together. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McLaughlin, their starting point guard, has helped pace the Colts to a
early 8-2 overall record and a 1-0 record in the Schuylkill League. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "We go how he plays, and so far he is playing really well," said Marian
Catholic coach Dave McAndrew. "We are 8-2 and he is averaging 14 points a
game. He is the glue to the team, and he makes everybody better around him." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McLaughlin is part of a Colt team that has five starting seniors, and all
five are captains. McLaughlin just helps keep them together. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have been together since freshman year and I think we all are leaders,
all five of us are captains," said McLaughlin. "The underclassman look up to
that and notice that." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The other four captains are Kenny Lawson, Mike Perilli, John Pieracini, and
Mark Makovec. All five of these players have been together for over three
years now and are playing together as a team. All five players are good
athletes and all are capable of putting points on the board. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As the point guard, McLaughlin's responsibility is to get the ball to all
his teammates and look for the shot himself. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have some guys who will have an off-night. You have to get it to the
guy where he likes it, and get it to the guy that is hot," said McLaughlin.
"We are all good athletes, and if someone isn't scoring he will just play
better defense. Everybody is out for each other." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although McLaughlin distributes the ball, he is also called on to hit the
outside shot more this year than before. His outside shot is something
McLaughlin has worked on hard over the summer to develop. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He is the most dedicated player I have ever coached," said McAndrew. "All
summer long he shot two- or three-thousand jumpers a week." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McLaughlin has seen the results of all his hard work this year with 27
three-pointers, and he's been successful at busting zone defenses with his
outside shot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He showed what he can do from the outside in a game this year against
Tamaqua, scoring nine points in a 45-second period, with three three-pointers
in row. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I saw this summer that he emerged as a scorer," said McAndrew. "He is the
glue because of his ability to make the people better around him. He has a
point guard mentality, but he is still a scorer." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That wasn't the role McLaughlin had last year for the Colts. His primary
job a season ago was to get the ball to the school's all-time leading scorer,
Brad Shanfelt, who's now at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But this year, McLaughlin and his teammates all have to step up the scoring
without Shanfelt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This year I have to look to shoot more and still look for the pass," said
McLaughlin. "The season is going good so far. I am confident in my shot every
game and I am shooting the ball better. I am pleased with my season so far." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last year the Colts had a successful year, as they played for the District
11 title and competed in the PIAA state playoffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Last year we were in the district championship and played in states," said
McLaughlin. "This year I think we can step up and win the district title and
move on to states. We have five guys that could score in double figures at any
time. We have to score and play defense instead of just trying to outscore
teams."
