Tech's coach, wrestlers win on and off the mat &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Sunday we announced a year-long project to show how the Wyoming Valley
can join the lists of ``America's Best Schools.'' Truth is, we already know
what it'll take to achieve that goal. We can paint you that portrait right
nowThe picture looks a lot like Jim Fender, the scrappy and inspiring
wrestling coach at the West Side Tech. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fender was the centerpiece of a terrific story in Friday's Times Leader. It
seems that Tech's wrestling team is undefeated for the first time in 20 years.
That in itself is a fine accomplishment for Fender and his team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But something's happening on the Tech team that should make its coach and
members just about float over the mats with pride. Several wrestlers were
almost down-for-the-count before they joined the team, sportswriter Lori
Shontz reported. They were "just saying yes" (or seemed about to do so) to a
host of the temptations that haunt parents and surround teenagers throughout
adolescence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Enter Fender, who had been there himself. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As a teenager, Fender found that wrestling gave him the discipline he
needed to keep life from taking him down. He used that knowledge to succeed in
college, graduate school and a teaching career -- and now passe it on to his
wrestlers. He recruits hard-luck kids who look like they could profit from the
lesson. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I found out that the harder I worked, the luckier I got," Fender said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ~~"Then I figured out that it wasn't luck any more." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sure enough, the fired-up youngsters now seem to be thwarting the best
holds and reversals that adolescence has to offer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There are no easy ways out in Jim Fender's world. Hard work is the only
answer -- and no athletes work harder than wrestlers, who shun Thanksgiving
dinners and Christmas feasts in their efforts to keep down their weight. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But oh, the rewards at the end of that struggle. Self-esteem as learned in
a class is one thing. Self-esteem that comes after landing on a sweat-slicked
mat with a slam, but then picking yourself up and going back to pin the
warrior who had thrown you -- well, that's a confidence of a whole different
kind. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hard work and high standards are the secrets of success, in athletics,
academics or any human endeavor. Coach Jim Fender deserves applause for
teaching that lesson -- and his ravenous wrestlers deserve a hot fudge sundae
apiece for listening.
