Bloomsburg readies for a `Waltz' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble's 1993-94 season takes a contemporary turn
next month when Paula Vogel's highly-acclaimed dark comedy, ``The Baltimore &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Waltz,'' opens at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Feb. 4With this
award-winning fantasy play, Vogel has created a moving tribute to the brother
she lost to AIDS. "The Baltimore Waltz" has been produced all over the United
States, but this production will be one of the few to bring Vogel's work to a
largely rural audience. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In "The Baltimore Waltz" the audience meets Anna, an elementary school
teacher stricken with "Acquired Toilet Disease," contracted through using the
toilet in her students' restroom. Searching for a cure for this fatal disease,
Anna and her brother Carl take a feverish fantasy tour of Europe. As they
travel the continent, Carl embarks on a wild espionage scheme with a
mysterious Third Man -- out of 1940's-era Hollywood -- while Anna takes a
final, mad dash at romance. In the heart-wrenching closing scene, the allegory
comes crashing down as Anna and the audience realize that she is helpless to
save her brother's life. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Those attending "The Baltimore Waltz" are advised that the play does
contain adult language and scenes. As with all BTE productions, copies of the
script are available at the box office for audience members to read prior to
attending the show. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In a brief return to the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Leigh Strimbeck will
direct the play. Strimbeck returns to BTE after seven months of an ongoing
leave of absence since completing a three-year term as Ensemble director. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ensemble member A. Elizabeth Dowd will play the role of Anna. Dowd's last
appearance was her critically-acclaimed portrayal of Claire Zachanassian in
last year's production of "The Visit." She then directed the wild comedy "The
Mystery of Irma Vep" on the BTE Summer Stage, before directing the children's
cast of "A Christmas Carol." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Starring with Dowd will be Ensemble candidate Seth Reichgott as Anna's
brother, Carl. So far this season, Reichgott has portrayed Froggy LeSeuer in
last fall's comedy "The Foreigner," and a vareity of roles in "A Christmas
Carol." Reichgott is in his second season with BTE. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Guest artist John Lynch will return to BTE to play the role of the Third
Man, a part that will require him to change character over a half-dozen times
during the play. Lynch's past roles at BTE include Pentheus in 1992's "Women
of Bakkhos," and Marchbanks in "Candida" in 1991. Lynch has recently returned
from touring North America in the Ken Hill production of "The Phantom of the
Opera." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Designers for "The Baltimore Waltz" include Richard Latta, lighting; James
Bazewicz, scenery; Joe Jurchak, sound and April Bevans, costumes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Regular performances of the play will begin on Friday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. and
continue Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. through Feb. 20.
Also, there will be two reduced-price "sneak previews" on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at
7 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Performances will be at the Alvinal Krause Theatre, 226 Center Street,
Bloomsburg. Tickets, on sale now, are $15 for adults; $9, students and seniors
60 and older; $1 for Bloomsburg University students with current student I.D.
