Gays should rally here &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Straight and gay, male and female, here and elsewhere, we must all step
forward to meet the dismal challenge that continues to spotlight Wilkes-Barre
as one of the most hate-filled places in America, where too many people detest
damn near everybodyBlacks and Jews know resentment here. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Welfare recipients, the homeless and women who expect equal rights also are
scorned by the masses who actually believe that their little part of the
country truly has a heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yet, members of the gay community might very well feel the most pain. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Living at the bottom of the pecking order, they sometimes exist as a
bizarre common denominator for blacks, whites and others who unite in their
hatred of queers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Local children have historically grown up in Northeastern Pennsylvania
wearing their bigotry on their sleeves like so many colorful merit badges. In
1994, they continue to learn (if you want to call it that) that it's all right
to target thy neighbor. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hate crimes flourish here, ignorance rules as the grand oppressor, neighbor
turns on neighbor in the name of traditional American values and the peasants
bow down to Al Boris, the crown prince of provincialism who panders to simple
minds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After lots of practice, the veteran Wilkes-Barre City Council member has
finally careened wildly out of control in his disregard for human rights and
common decency. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Boris now threatens the community he serves by advocating murder. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I was out of town last month when Boris made his startling "half of them
should be shot" remark in response to a citizen complaint about alleged gay
sex acts in Nesbitt Park. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Follow-up remarks included blaming homosexual men for molesting children
despite a massive body of evidence to the contrary and attacking gay AIDS
patients as having brought the disease on themselves and getting what they
deserve. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After reading the newspaper account, I felt like someone who once really
believed that he could do something of value only to discover that he is a
fool and a failure. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I put the paper aside. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 aybe Wilkes-Barre is hopeless, I thought. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's taken a few days to recuperate -- although I have not yet fully
recovered -- but at least I know what to do. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm asking for help. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Because for all I know Al Boris could act on his own advice and go shoot
him one of them there faggots and city council would vote to reimburse him for
the bullets. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Only a handful of public officials, including Mayor Lee Namey, has publicly
chastised Herr Boris' mad municipal goose-stepping. Already, the sins of our
town father are old news. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Besides, Boris said he was sorry about the shooting comment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But, to be absolved, it must be avenged. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's why I'm challenging the Wilkes-Barre gay community to show how much
power it really has. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's time to plan a massive gay rights rally on Public Square and a concert
-- perhaps on May Day -- featuring some big names from the entertainment
industry. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Let each of the thousands of gay men and lesbian women in The Greater
Wilkes-Barre Area contact 10 gay men and lesbian women in another city. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Put this column onto the computer networks and in the national gay
magazines as an open invitation to the armies of gay men and lesbian women
living in major gay hubs like New York and Philadelphia to come to our town
some day this spring to help us resist the assault against our neighbors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Since Boris sits on the board of directors of The F.M. Kirby Center For The
Performing Arts, the community theater is clearly the appropriate place for
the concert. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And, on the night of the show, I'll buy Boris a front row seat. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes-Barre will never be the same. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And that's the whole point. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
