WILKES-BARRE -- The buses were already running and some students were
already walking into schools on a cold -- but calm -- Friday morning. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then the white stuff came down. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Wilkes-Barre Area schools canceled classes Friday, not taking any chances
with forecasts of brutal arctic weather moving into the Wyoming Valley by the
afternoon. Buses carrying students were told by radio to take them back home
and not to pick up any more on their routes, said Jeff Namey, deputy
superintendent of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "At 6:30 a.m., when the buses started their runs, everything was fine. Then
all of a sudden the snow started," Namey said. "We started getting calls from
the Bear Creek area that the roads were becoming treacherous." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The cancellation came two days after two school buses, carrying
Wilkes-Barre Area students during a snowstorm, crashed Wednesday on Route 115
in Bear Creek Township. Students suffered cuts and bruises in the crash. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Namey said Friday's decision was "probably related" to the accident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "About 10 percent of our students were already on the road. We were faced
with a decision, whether we should cancel or let out early. We'd rather cancel
than get into a situation where we'd be releasing students into a heavy
storm," Namey said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes-Barre Area was the only district to cancel classes outright on
Friday. Others let students out early. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Snow fell steadily in Wilkes-Barre early Friday, but lightened up by the
afternoon. Still, the district worried that driving conditions -- particularly
in Bear Creek -- could turn even more dangerous if slush on the wet roads
turned to ice as temperatures dropped into the single digits late in the day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Many parents in Bear Creek were angry with us for picking up students in
the first place, but I told them we can't cancel in anticipation of a storm,"
he said. "It was a tough call."
