HARVEYS LAKE -- Two residents lashed out at a borough councilman for what
he termed "community volunteerism." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 However, Ruth Eaton and Tony Kleynowski saw it differently. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Both residents took council member David Abod to task for driving the
borough's police cruiser to a recent fire and for driving the borough's snow
plow during Monday's snowstorm and ultimately damaging its side window in an
accident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You are not a policeman. And you have no right to plow. You were in an
accident with that vehicle," Kleynowski said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Assistant Police Chief Ron Spock said he authorized Abod to bring the
police cruiser to the fire. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We needed help. He asked me what needed to be done and I told him," Spock
said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Council member Thomas Kehler defended Abod's actions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "All the councilmen volunteer their time in an emergency. Our road crew
were completely exhausted with the snowstorm. If someone is capable of doing
the job on a voluntary basis, I have no problem," Kehler said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Former council member Bill Gallagher also defended Abod. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's been a practice for years for all of us to chip in to get things done
in an emergency. It's a shame to have people bringing up subjects like this
especially when people are trying to help," Gallagher said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Kleynowski continued to "protest the arrogance of council." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This convenient morality upsets me," he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Eaton also complained that Abod tied up the borough's communications system
to make a personal call. Abod admitted that it was a mistake but defended his
right to help the community in an emergency. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's a sad state of affairs when people begin accusing volunteers of doing
something wrong," Abod said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Solicitor Charles McCormick said council members are covered by the
borough's insurance policy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business, the council: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Accepted the resignations of road crew members Michael Simonson and Linford
Evans effective Jan. 28. Simonson, a 3-year employee, gave his notice because
he was "exposed to a syringe which almost penetrated his leg." Evans cited
"verbal abuse by residents" and additional recycling assignments as his reason
for resigning. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In spite of the resignations, the council awarded the two men an hourly pay
increase to $7.25 retroactive to Jan. 1. Simonson's previous rate was $6.30;
Evans' was $6.90. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Heard newly-elected Mayor Richard Boice announce his formation of a
volunteer Council to the Mayor. Boice said he would like one or two residents
from each area of Harveys Lake to "enlighten him on problems in their areas."
Boice has no limit on the number of people and has already recruited seven
members. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Increased borough secretary Carole Samson's wage from $8 to $8.25 per hour.
