 A sadder, wiser society turns back to chastity &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First Jesse Jackson says you can't blame inner-city violence on racism.
Then &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bill Clinton echoes the dreaded Dan Quayle himself by mourning the decay of
family valuesAnd now the power of teaching chastity makes the front page of
the Sunday New York Times? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 California isn't the only place where the ground is shaking. The political
earth beneath our feet has tilted in the past few months -- and once-fervent
modernists are tumbling to the more-traditional side. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They'll be welcome there, as are all people who realize the power of the
free market, religious values and other old-fashioned ideas to help solve
society's problems. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The latest example deserves a closer look. "Sex educators for young see new
virtue in chastity," the headline read on the front page of Sunday's New York
Times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The article, written from San Diego, declares "a growing number of
teen-agers around the country, 180,000 of them here in California, ... are
learning the rewards of postponing sex.... &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "These programs, which emphasize abstinence rather than contraception, were
scoffed at until recently by most family planning experts, who assumed
teen-agers were going to have sex whether adults liked it or not so the
grown-ups should stop preaching and pass out condoms." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Note key phrase in the above paragraph: "until recently." Now, apparently,
the family planning experts are changing their minds. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Note, also, the implied dismissal of the sex-frenzy argument. That's
important, because with that dismissal comes the recognition that teens are
not animals in heat but are thinking and reasoning beings. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No better lesson could be taught in our homes and schools. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And the new teaching goes on beyond those buildings' four walls: Billboards
along Maryland highways declare "Abstinence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder." At
the "True Love Waits" rally in Washington next summer, several hundred
thousand teens are expected to pledge their intent to remain chaste until
marriage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Prominent characters in major TV series are announced virgins, the Times
story reports. Perhaps most incredibly of all, "a group of professional
athletes, led by A.C. Green of the Phoenix Suns, are boasting of their
virginity and touring high schools with an abstinence video." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In short, the following trend now has been officially recognized by The New
York Times: "Chastity seems to be making a comeback." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This shift on cutting-edge sexual thinking is profoundly important. First,
it gives the lie to the argument that there's no turning back. Now that
society's fetters are off, it's pointless to try to put them back on,
free-thinkers used to say. No culture that tasted the fruit of promiscuity was
ever supposed to go back to such difficult notions as monogamy or lifelong
fidelity. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But, clearly, a large portion of U.S. society is going back. So scratch one
myth about the inevitable "progress" of the sexual revolution -- and chalk up
a key victory for the traditionalists. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Second, this rediscovery of ancient wisdom is welcome in its own right.
Unrestained sexuality has brought moments of bliss to millions of Americans --
but it has also helped mire our culture in a quicksand of moral despair. The
AIDS epidemic is not the only byproduct of the sexual revolution. The
explosive growth in teen pregnancies and fatherless homes is, too. Social
commentator Charles Murray recently wrote that this growth "is the single most
important social problem of our time -- more important than crime, drugs,
poverty, illiteracy, welfare or homelessness because it drives everything
else." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And though some may argue with Murray, few will try to stop a trend that
promises to bring more children into intact and loving homes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, the "stamp of approval" by the New York Times;
what's next, a "three strikes, you're out' crime platform by New York's Gov.
Mario Cuomo? Homeless advocates urging pedestrians not to give spare change to
beggars, because the money hurts rather than helps? Calls for less dependence
and more personal responsibility echoing throughout the land? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wait a minute. This just in....
