 The 16.4 inches of snow that fell at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
International &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Airport in Avoca set two records. One was the snowiest Jan. 17 in
historyThat amount, when added to previous snowfall, helped set the record for
the snowiest January in history with 36.7 inches of white stuff, topping the
1987 record of 29.6 inches. And there're 13 days left to count, including any
snowfall today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The area's 47.4 inches of snow so far this winter exceeds the average
annual snowfall of 46 inches, and puts the area on its way toward the 30-year
record of 76 inches, set during the winter of 1969-1970. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Tuesday, two avalanches struck southern Luzerne County in Conyngham and
Nescopeck. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Forecast &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WILKES-BARRE -- Monday's snowfall, which set two records, was enough to
make even those who enjoy an occasional snowfall cringe. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But have no fear, warmer weather is on the way, promised Mike Jurewicz, a
meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Avoca. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although temperatures will remain bone-chilling today and Thursday, a "heat
wave" arrives soon thereafter, he says, as a warm front heads this way from
the Gulf of Mexico. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "By the weekend, there'll be somewhat of a thaw," he said. "It looks like
temperatures will go above freezing. Probably in the 35 to 40 range." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's good news for area residents who spent Tuesday digging out of the
