Pennsylvanians did right by cutting back on power &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It might not seem like much, that story about the demand for power dropping
10 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; percent after Gov. Robert Casey called on Pennsylvanians to conserveBut
think about what could have happened. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The governor made his plea on Wednesday during one of the coldest days in
Pennsylvania history. He did so as the state's power lines practically hummed
like strummed guitar strings, throbbing under the incredible demands for
power. Rolling blackouts already had clamped a capo over the lines in parts of
the state, "silencing" them. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And more blackouts seemed inevitable. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now, consider the possibilities: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Government (and governors) are not held in very high esteem these days.
That's the polite way of saying it. The impolite way is to say they're
scorned, vilified, sputtered at so harshly on talk-radio shows that you feel
like wiping off the spittle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What if the anti-government legions had protested the governor's call by
deliberately turning up their thermostats? You can almost hear the
counter-call going up: "Come on, boys, turn on your stereos and turn your TVs
on loud. Let's make them Harrisburgers sweat." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Or the governor's plea could have been selectively disobeyed. Why should I?
Pennsylvanians could have wondered, individually and en masse. Everyone else
will be cutting back. It won't hurt if I leave my teensy-weensy little lights
on. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Or the message from Gov. Casey could have simply dropped into a void,
unheard and unhindered, ignored like one of those pronouncements declaring
June 13 to be Pennsylvania Blueberry Day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Any of those scenarios would have led to great hand-wringing, for they
rightly would have been seen as further signs of the decay of our society. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But they didn't happen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Instead, the governor issued his call -- and by golly, Pennsylvanians
didn't think twice. They acted. They spun those thermostats lower, clicked off
the unneeded lights -- and shrank demand, making possible uninterrupted power
as the power lines softened their hum. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We faced an emergency as a state. We were called upon as a state. And we
responded -- not just as a state, but as a community. That's a powerful thing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Way to go, Pennsylvania. You came through when needed and gave us all a
reason to hope.
