WEATHER INCREASES NEED FOR DONORS 





WILKES-BARRE -- In the wake of the regional power crisis, the Red Cross is
working to keep one essential service operating -- the area blood supply. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bad weather has caused a sharp drop-off in the number of blood donors able
to travel to donor centers in the Philadelphia area and New Jersey, for
example. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The situation is not as dire here, but blood still is needed, said Nancy
Carmon, director of communications for American Red Cross Blood Services,
Northeastern Pennsylvania Region. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One day this week, a little more than 20 units were collected, well short
of the 350 units needed to supply area hospitals adequately. "We need those
350 units every day," Carmon said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To donate blood here, call your local Red Cross chapter or 1-800-432-8045.

 In the state, whole-blood donors also are needed at centers in West
Chester, Willow Grove and Philadelphia, and in New Jersey, donors are needed
in Cherry Hill, Trenton and Pleasantville. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Philadelphia area is especially in need of platelet-pheresis donors,
which are down 20 percent. Platelets prevent fatal bleeding. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Because the platelets must be used within five days, Red Cross officials
are concerned about meeting patient needs this weekend. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Platelet-pheresis donors who are able to travel safely are being asked to
schedule appointments. Those who have four-wheel drive vehicles or who live
near a donor center should call 800-26-BLOOD. cq &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Wilkes-Barre donor center so far has been able to meet platelet needs
in this area, Carmon said.
