IN THE MEDALS AT OLYMPICS 





Wilcox: U.S. could be in the medals at Olympics n Feb. 13, the alpine
skiing portion of the 1994 Winter Olympics will get under way with a downhill
race in NorwayDownhill: It's the dangerous, "glamour" event in alpine skiing
in which racers customarily exceed 60 mph. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Will an American skier earn a medal? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Quite possibly, according to former U.S. Ski Team downhill specialist Lisa
Wilcox. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilcox is in the area appearing as part of The Golden Rule-Park City Ski
Tour. She stopped at Blue Mountain Thursday, Montage Friday, Jack Frost and
Big Boulder Saturday and will be at Alpine Mountain today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The U.S. team has a very good chance of winning medals. I mean that,"
Wilcox said. "Americans always ski well at the big events, while the `big
names' don't always do so. None of the international teams are counting the
Americans out of the races." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilcox has every right to speculate. She was the 1984 U.S. Downhill
Champion and the 1983 North American Trophy Series Champion while skiing for
the 1981-1986 U.S. Ski Teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She also placed eighth in a crowded field at the 1984 World Cup at Mount
Saint Anne, Canada, and skied on the 1985 World Championship Team at Bormio,
Italy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilcox, whose racing career ended after a terrible, leg-shattering crash in
Switzerland, is currently the Western Manager for Raichle-Molitor U.S.A.
(RMUSA) in Denver. RMUSA markets Fischer skis, Raichle boots, Look bindings
and UVEX goggles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No matter that both the current men's and women's alpine ski teams have
hardly set the ski racing world on fire this season. Wilcox remains confident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You have to remember what happened in 1984," she explained. "The U.S. had
a crummy team. It was the worst year in U.S. ski racing history. The team went
into the Olympics feeling no pressure. When it was over, there were medals.
Bill Johnson won a medal, and so did the Mahres. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The current U.S. team is a lot like the 1984 team." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ten years ago in Sarajevo, Johnson won a gold in the downhill. Phil Mahre
captured a gold in the slalom event and his brother, Steve, took the silver.
Debbie Armstrong won a gold in the giant slalom, while Christin Cooper took
the silver medal. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So who are medal contenders in this year's Olympics? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilcox puts her money on downhillers AJ Kitt and Hilary Lindh. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "On the men's team, it has to be Kitt. He has the experience, the
background. Tommy Moe is on a roll this season, but so much of downhill is
psychological. You have one race, one run, and everything has to happen
exactly right," Wilcox said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's a fine line, and you can't be too aggressive. You have to reach that
perfect point between precision and letting the skis go. Take one gate the
wrong way and it's all over." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kitt is the most successful and experienced downhiller on the men's U.S.
team. He finished a disappointing ninth in the 1992 Olympics, but finished
third last year in the world championships. He's had 17 top 10 World Cup
finishes since 1990. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lindh won a silver medal in the 1992 Olympics and has had 10 top 10 World
Cup finishes since 1988. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Both Kitt and Lindh race in Raichle boots. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "In downhill, experience is everything, it can take you unbelievably far.
Kitt and Lindh have that experience. They have been skiing well but they
haven't put it all together yet. They have all the tools. They can do
everything they need to do technically to win medals," Wilcox said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilcox explained that Raichle boots offer downhillers an advantage. The
Flexon Comp models used by downhillers is a relatively soft boot that allows
skiers to feel the terrain more readily. It also allows them to flex farther
forward when traveling at 70 mph in a aerodynamic tuck. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Staying comfortably in that tuck can shave off precious tenths of seconds
and spell the difference between a medal and an also-ran finish. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "In downhill, everything happens so fast," Wilcox said. "You must have the
proper focus and take the right line. You have only one chance to put it
together. Do that, and do it well, and you can win medals." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Wilcox, appearing on behalf of The Golden Rule-Park City Ski Tour, will
visit 11 ski resorts in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia before the
tour ends Jan. 30. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The tour was designed to encourage competitive skiing and bring former U.S.
Ski Team racers in contact with the skiing public. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During the Northeastern Pennsylvania leg of the tour Wilcox pace set junior
ski races for the McCall Ski Games at Blue Mountain Thursday and the McCall
Rally at Jack Frost Mountain Saturday. She will be attending the Battisto Cup
at Alpine Mountain today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The McCall Games were held in honor of State Representative Keith McCall,
while the Battisto Cup will recognize State Representative Joe Battisto. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The $5 entry fee for these junior ski racing events will be donated to the
U.S. Ski Team according to Sandy Black, the tour's road manager. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At Blue Mountain, 44 young racers turned out, while 86 racers ripped
through the gates at Jack Frost Mountain. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
