WILKES-BARRE -- As happy and relieved as Jane Brown was to get her
bachelor's degree Thursday, her three children were even happier. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They're so glad mom doesn't have any more finals," said Brown, who
graduated in accounting Thursday at Wilkes University's winter commencement
ceremony. The university awarded 108 bachelor's degrees and 38 master's
degrees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Wilkes President Christopher N. Breiseth, in his remarks to the graduates,
urged them to use their talents to adapt in a constantly changing world. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "More even than your parents and grandparents before you, you will need to
dig down into yourselves, into your unique talents and energies -- yes, even
passions -- to discover or uncover your abilities to contribute to this
exciting, dangerous, unpredictable, ceaselessly changing world," Breiseth
said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The commencement address was given by Benjamin F. Fiester, Ph.D., of
Berwick, an English professor who last May was named Carpenter Outstanding
Teacher during Faculty Recognition Day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Brown and Douglas J. Evans, who graduated cum laude in accounting, came
away from their Wilkes education with more than diplomas. They met in the
first weekend of the semester in April 1991, and are getting married July 9. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The two met in a tax accounting class. "An awful class to meet in, isn't
it?" Brown said, laughing. "We helped each other and kept each other company
all the way through." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans also sometimes got stuck watching the kids, who range in age from 8
to 13, Brown said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Both were students in the university's weekender program, in which classes
are held every third weekend of a semester. The program offers an alternative
to night school for people who work full-time during the week, said Stephanie
Simmons of University Relations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It can make for some long weekends. Depending on how many classes you
take, a weekend can be from 8 in the morning to 8 at night Saturday and 8 to 5
on Sunday," said Evans, who works as a computer technician for Patrick Media
in Scranton. He holds an associate's degree in information systems from
Lackawanna Junior College, and said he wanted to go back to school to enhance
his career. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Harry Steuben, director of Wilkes' evening, summer and weekend programs,
said the weekender program has 120-130 students each semester, and offers full
majors in four programs: accounting, business administration, psychology and
sociology. Some core courses are also offered in nursing and computer
information systems. The majority of the students are older; the average age
is 30 to 35, he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Some are supported by their employers, others are people who just wanted
to go back to school," Steuben said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's excellent for people who have jobs, families -- people who already
have some direction in life," said Brown, who works as an accountant for
Jaunty Textiles in Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
