The right gear and technique lands fish &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Think deep when fishing for crappie. Bluegills and perch can be taken in
the shallows, but at this time of year, crappie school in deeper water near
structureIf you catch one, keep the rig beneath the ice. Its buddies are
probably nearby. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Two-pound test monofilament is fine for panfish, but an old rule of thumb
says 6-pound test is best if pickerel are present. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pickerel have razor-sharp teeth that can quickly cut through light
monofilament. Some die-hard pickerel anglers (and those few who pursue musky
exclusively) will use light wire leader, but I never cared much for it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even the thinnest wire leader is stiff, somewhat heavy and seems to inhibit
the action of the baitfish. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of course, lose several fish to severed lines and you will quickly attach
wire leaders to the rig. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Live bait are most commonly used with tip-ups. If the baits are impaled in
the lower lip, they will remain fresh and lively for long periods of time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For larger fish, such as bass, pickerel, and walleye, baitfish three or
four inches long will suffice. If you want a musky, try something five or even
six inches in length. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If panfish are your game, consider using fathead minnows. They are small,
but are more than a mouthful for bluegills, crappies and perch. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fatheads can be used successfully with tip-ups, but I've had my best luck
using them with a jigging rod. I attach the minnow to a small, weighted jig
and let it tumble to the bottom. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Slowly work the minnow with a short jigging motion. Stop about every foot
or so until the jig reaches the surface, then try again. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This method is especially useful if fish are suspended in schools at a
specific depth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pull up the line by hand rather than with the reel when you catch a fish.
When the jig is baited again, it can be quickly dropped to the appropriate
depth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
