 Winter stinks, Part II: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So just when you think you've seen it all -- and survived -- Mother Nature
keeps dumping on usIf you haven't found enough reason yet to insult my
driving, here's some new ammunition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I was pretty proud of my performance this week. I negotiated the family car
through ice, snow and slush without harming any lives, limbs or personal
property ... until the flying deer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now I know there are a lot of deer in the Back Mountain, and you have to be
on a constant lookout since they like to bound across the roads (often in a
graceful group). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But I didn't know about the flying species. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This doe didn't look both ways, didn't signal and had no landing lights.
She just appeared. My car was the last thing she saw. Thank goodness for
seatbelts. Thank goodness the airbag didn't inflate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The next morning I took the car in for repairs, with hairy evidence of my
encounter still in the car's headlight and grill. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Next stop: Never-Say-Die Car Rental, one of the few places that had any
rental cars left in this season from hell. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Waiting for me on the lot was a beat-up Chrevolet Celebrity. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So the car was dirty, rusty and smelled of stale cigarette smoke. So the
car had one of those old bench seats that are so hard to adjust for us
vertically challenged drivers. So at least I could drive from home to work. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It was the work-to-home part that didn't work so well, and Tuesday night
the car gave out on a hill barely five minutes from home. Not my week for
cars. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I've always wanted to use this line; I heard it from my father. He used to
joke that if his house burned down, he'd call the bank to tell them their
house was destroyed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So I called Never-Say-Die to tell them their car had broken down. "Come get
it," I said. "I'm getting a ride home." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We've all been doing this recently: comparing our winter horror stories
with our friends and family to declare the winner. I know I haven't won. But
my skill at disposing of cars is helping my standings. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now imagine this. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sylvia Castro is from Fresno, California, where a cold front means it's in
the 50's. She's seen snow, but where she lives they keep it in the mountains
where it belongs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She's used to visiting snow. "We play in it for a while and then we go
home," she says. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Not this winter. Because Sylvia is in the Capital Cities/ABC Intern
Program, she's here. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And she doesn't like it either. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nor did she come adequately prepared. "You'll barely see any snow," Sylvia
was told when she asked about wintering here. And they never get earthquakes
in California either. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sylvia bought a coat and she's walking around in those shoe-boot things
that people who don't know slush THINK are boots. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even so, Sylvia has been relatively lucky. The heat still works in her
apartment, and other than a broken water pump and some unnerving slides in her
car, she's fared pretty well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And Sylvia is out of here. Come Saturday, Sylvia will be heading toward her
next stop: Fort Worth, Texas. It should be warmer there. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So if Sylvia and I can't win the "I had the worst time this winter"
contest, maybe you can. Write and tell me about how horrible you've had it.
Send pictures of your leaking house and brown icicles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
