The sleet. The snow. And now the dated milk. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 School districts had to contend with another aggravation this stormy
winter: cartons of milk piling up because of snow days. Area districts racked
up as many as eight days off so far because of bad weather, leaving a lot of
milk sitting in school refrigerators. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Parents began to wonder when students came home with tales of milk cartons
with expired dates. In Courtdale, Maryalice Vehoski worried when her two
daughters vomited Friday after drinking expired milk at Wyoming Valley West's
Elementary Center in Larksville. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Vehoski, a nurse, said the milk was not spoiled, and she didn't know for
sure if it made her daughters sick. But the district shouldn't be giving out
milk past its date -- which it did again on Monday and Tuesday, Vehoski said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Come on, I'm paying for this. I send lunch money to school with my
daughters, I don't want them getting expired milk," she said. "If they're
going to do that, I would like a phone call and I'll bring them fresh milk to
school." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Because of the weather, the Department of Agriculture informed dairies and
food service managers they could use milk up to 12 days after its "sell by"
date, said Jackie Sposto, food service manager at Wilkes-Barre Area School
District. That date is not a deadline for drinking the milk, but for the date
by which dairies and stores must sell it, Sposto said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The concepts of `sell by' and `use by' are two different things," she
said. "Just because the date is past doesn't mean it's bad." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Just to be sure, cafeteria workers sampled every case of milk before giving
it to students, Sposto said. Wilkes-Barre Area had milk dated from Jan. 18 to
Jan. 21 when school resumed from a string of snow days Jan. 24, she said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wyoming Area workers took the same, taste-testing precautions, said Harry
Giacometti, the district's business manager who also oversees the cafeterias.
One carton was spoiled, and students wound up not receiving any milk dated
before Feb. 2, he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood Area students had no cause to worry; the district didn't receive
any deliveries right before its series of snow days, so the whole problem was
avoided, said Superintendent Gordon Snow. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Most other cafeteria foods can be frozen when snow days strike. When
Wilkes-Barre Area turned two delays into days off, the district donated chili
and some prepared tacos to the Luzerne County Prison and the St. Vincent De
Paul soup kitchen, Sposto said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With the recent respite from snowstorms, most districts should be caught up
on milk supplies. But milk-drinking students were most likely fine, Sposto
said.
