NUANGOLA -- Karen Schydlowski's routine drive to work at the Drums post
office on Friday morning was interrupted by a horrible sight along Interstate
81. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Dallas commuter saw a horse lying on its side on the pavement in the
rest area between the Nuangola and Dorrance exits. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "This poor boy was laid out flat behind a trailer," Schydlowski said. "He
wasn't moving a muscle. I don't know much about horses, but I do know when a
horse is down, it's bad news." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Schydlowski, a member of the board of directors of the Luzerne County
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, grabbed her cellular
telephone and summoned help. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 State police discovered the horse injured, bleeding and drugged, said
Edward Dubil, SPCA cruelty investigator. The horse, named Danny, is a
14-year-old chestnut quarter horse with white markings, Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Danny was one of nine horses that Donald Mason of Hagerstown, Md., had been
towing south in a trailer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mason told police he slammed the brakes when a car cut in front of him,
Dubil said. Mason said the force shook up the horses, and the injured horse
kicked itself, Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The horse suffered several bad cuts and bruises and lost a lot of blood,
said Dr. Michael Hennessey, who stitched up the animal at Dallas Veterinary
Clinic. Also, Mason had tranquilized the horse, causing it to lie down, Dubil
said. Had the horse not been able to stand, it would have had to be killed,
Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As workers tried to get Danny up, state police weighed Mason's trailer.
State law allows 1,000 pounds per animal to be transported, up to a certain
total weight depending on the size of the vehicle. Mason started out with nine
horses in a trailer built for four, Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Without Danny, the trailer was just within the legal weight limit, so Dubil
gave Mason a choice: Give the horse away or be arrested for towing an
overweight trailer and transporting an injured animal, Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mason, who told police he bought the horses in Pennsylvania, left the horse
without argument. Dubil said he wondered about the entire situation,
especially because Mason allegedly told police he was returning to Maryland
but did not have the necessary paperwork to transport animals across state
lines. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Police notified Maryland state police that Mason might be entering the
state, Dubil said. Late Friday afternoon, state police at Hagerstown said they
had no reports or knowledge of such an incident. A woman in Hagerstown who
identified herself as Mason's wife said he bought the horses in Massachusetts
and was selling them in Virginia. Mason could not be reached for comment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "But at the rest stop, he didn't break any laws. Maybe some moral laws, but
not the Pennsylvania state crime code," Dubil said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As for Danny, Hennessey said he is not sure if the horse had any of its
injuries before Friday's incident. The horse was in stable condition Friday
night, he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He was eating when I left him. We'll have to see how he does." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
