`Temperature' ends a hot spelling bee &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 EDITOR'S NOTE: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Local students are competing in school spelling bees as part of the
regional and national Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee, sponsored locally by The
Times &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Leader. Winners at each school will compete at the regional spelling bee on &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 March 19 at Wilkes University's Dorothy Dickson Darte Center in
Wilkes-BarreThe regional winner will go on in May to a national competition in
Washington D.C. Student reporters from each school are covering the bees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 HAZLETON -- The excitement and the tension increased as Jan. 21 approached
-- the day of the A.D. Thomas School annual spelling bee. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The students who entered were relieved to find out that school was
postponed for another week. Now they had an extra week to study. The spelling
bee was finally held Jan. 27. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You could cut through the tension with a knife the day of the bee. As the
students misspelled more and more words the tension even increased. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Finally, contestants were narrowed down to two sixth-grade students -- Jodi
Piccolo, 12, and Nicole Mattie, 11. It seemed as if one of them would win but
then they both misspelled a word and they were back where they started. This
happened several times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then, Nicole misspelled the word "stimulus" and Jodi spelled it correctly.
Jodi hadn't won yet, though, because she still had to spell another word.
Well, she did. The word was "temperature." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We had our winner and everyone crowded around her, asked her questions and
congratulated her. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jodi claims she spelled some words wrong because she thought Nicole would
spell them correctly. They were both happy to be the last two students
standing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nicole, the runner-up, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Mattie, of
West First Street, West Hazleton. Jodi, the winner, is the daughter of Joseph
and Mary Ann Piccolo, of McKinley Street, Hazleton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A booklet of words was given to both Jodi and Nicole. Jodi will represent
A.D. Thomas School at the Regional Bee on March 19. If for some reason she
can't make it, Nicole will take her place. As you can guess, Jodi is very
excited -- good luck Jodi! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Times Leader will send the winner of the Regional Bee to Washington
D.C. for the National Bee in May. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Runners-up at the regional bee will be awarded a 32-volume set of the New
Encyclopedia Britannica for second place; the Random House Dictionary of the
English Language for third place; Merriam Webster's Ninth New Collegiate
Dictionary and hard-cover Merriam Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus, both
published by Merriam-Webster, Inc., for fourth place; and the World Almanac
for fifth place.
