 Snow-plowing expenses have cost Freeland borough $25,000, and overtime pay
has cost an estimated $6,000, Larry Falatko, head of the streets committee,
told the borough council MondayCouncil members also discussed the numerous
complaints received about garbage collections. Residents are asked to keep a
written record of any pick-up problems and report them to the borough
secretary. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Council members also reminded residents to clear paths on their sidewalks
so pedestrians can get through. Snow-covered sidewalks have been a problem on
Centre Street, creating a dangerous situation when pedestrians walk in the
street. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A collection receptacle will be set up on Birkbeck Street next to the
borough building for recycling used phone books. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Before the start of the meeting, a moment of silence was observed for
former councilmen William Anthony and John Watahovich, both of whom passed
away recently. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 HAZLETON &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 PP&amp;L manufacturing site gets community support &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pennsylvania Power &amp; Light major manufacturing site project is
receiving support from the community, the CAN DO Board of Directors was told
at the community-development organization's regular meeting Tuesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The project's supporters include the Mid-East Manufacturers Association,
the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, the city of Hazleton, the United Way
of Greater Hazleton, the United Labor Council, the Hazleton Area Literacy
Volunteers and the Hazleton Jewish Community Council, CAN DO Executive
Director Kevin O'Donnell said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In addition, board members were told Charlie Robinson, a CAN DO director,
gave presentations at several local service organizations, with more planned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 CAN DO's public-support campaign for the PP&amp;L project also included
appearances by Robinson and O'Donnell as "Newsmakers of the Day" on Hazleton
news station, TV-13 -- a cable program operated by The Standard Speaker in
cooperation with Sam-Som Productions. The program's studio is in the Standard
Speaker building on North Wyoming Avenue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 O'Donnell reported on a meeting with state Sen. Raphael Musto, D-Pittston
Township, about three environmental bills Musto is co-sponsoring. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The bills cover environmental assessments of abandoned industrial sites,
the liabilities for cleanup of contamination and use of existing industrial
sites instead of creation of new ones. The directors voted to support the
three bills. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 CAN DO voted to participate in a study of the city's three authorities and
ways of consolidating possibly overlapping duties. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WAZL has suggested a monthly radio program on activities of CAN DO and the
Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. The CAN DO board expressed interest in
participating.
