WILKES-BARRE -- The Times Leader/Wilkes University Poll was directed by
Thomas Baldino, professor of political science, and Mike Garr, associate
professor of sociology and health administration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Using random-digit computer dialing, several thousand telephone numbers
were called in Luzerne County, including the Hazleton area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After facsimile machines, businesses and other calls were deleted, a survey
team of Wilkes University students interviewed 410 residents during evening
hours from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The issue-oriented questions they asked were: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In general, do you think the laws covering the sale of guns should be made
stricter, less strict, or about the same as they are now? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Would you favor or oppose a law that requires any person who carries a gun
outside his or her home to have a license to do so? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Would you favor or oppose a law that would ban the manufacture, sale and
possession of all semiautomatic assault weapons such as the AK-47 or the Tech
9? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Would you favor or oppose a law that would ban the manufacture, sale and
possession of all handguns, except to police and other authorized personnel? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Would you favor or oppose a law that would ban possession of all guns of
any kind by private citizens? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Residents polled also were asked a series of demographics questions about
the number and types of guns they own. The answers were used to compare the
poll responses with points of view. Those questions were: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Do you yourself now have a gun anywhere on your property, such as in your
home, garage, barn, shed, car or truck? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Does anyone in your household now have a gun anywhere on your property? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Have you ever thought of purchasing a gun for protection? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What is the total number of guns now present on your property? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What kind of gun is on your property? (If only one). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What kinds of guns are on your property? (If more than one). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What is the primary reason you own a gun, for protection or for some other
reason? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Have you ever used a gun, even once, to defend yourself, your home, or your
family or possessions, either by firing it or threatening to fire it? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If a respondent was uncertain or declined to answer a question, the
computer threw out those responses when compiling the final percentages. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The poll is accurate plus or minus 5 percentage points, Baldino and Garr
said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Poll workers also asked age, sex, education, marital status, household
income before taxes, whether children live in the house and whether the
respondent is a member of the National Rifle Association.
